The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit (AARU) recently hosted a Staff Wellness Webinar. The initiative was a thoughtful gesture aimed at giving back to DUT staff by providing a safe and informative space to reflect on the importance of mental health and emotional well-being. The session was facilitated by Ms Nobuhle Mkhize, AARU Intern, who gracefully guided attendees through the programme and introduced the guest speaker, Ms Anne Rajcoomar from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).
Ms Rajcoomar delivered a powerful and engaging presentation titled “The Importance of Mental Health in the Workplace.” Drawing from SADAG’s nationwide experience in supporting individuals facing mental health challenges, she unpacked the key stressors experienced by employees, the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, and practical techniques for building resilience. Her insights resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom identified with the emotional, physical, and behavioural manifestations of burnout and stress. Importantly, she highlighted that mental health is not a weakness but a fundamental component of overall well-being and productivity.
Through an interactive and relatable presentation, Ms Rajcoomar emphasised the value of mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, movement, and honest conversations as accessible coping strategies. She shared valuable resources and helplines available through SADAG, offering participants tools to better manage their own mental health and support colleagues in distress. From self-care routines to recognising the signs of emotional exhaustion, the webinar equipped DUT staff with practical knowledge that could be applied in both professional and personal contexts.
What made the session even more impactful was its alignment with Mandela Day’s ethos of service and compassion. While Mandela Day is traditionally associated with acts of giving to the community, DUT’s approach this year underscored the importance of giving inward-taking the time to invest in oneself. By placing staff wellness at the centre, the AARU reminded the DUT community that caring for others begins with caring for oneself.
The Staff Wellness Webinar was not just a tribute to Madiba’s legacy but also a strategic and empathetic initiative that reinforced DUT’s commitment to a supportive work environment. In a time where mental health challenges continue to rise, the university’s proactive stance in partnering with organisations like SADAG and empowering staff through education and open dialogue marks a significant step towards a healthier, more resilient workforce.
