The Faculty of Applied Sciences’ Department of Chemistry recently marked Heritage Month with a vibrant Cultural Day celebration at the Steve Biko Campus. The event brought staff together to honour South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry and explore how traditional practices can enhance chemistry education.
The celebration provided a welcoming space for staff to share their heritage through traditional attire, storytelling, and meaningful dialogue on cultural diversity and inclusion in academic settings. Music, dance, and a shared lunch created opportunities for connection and cultural exchange among colleagues.
Dr Vimla Paul, the programme coordinator, led the initiative, with Prof N Deenadayalu, Head of Department, welcoming attendees and highlighting the Department’s commitment to an inclusive and culturally aware academic environment, where diverse perspectives strengthen both teaching and research.
The Cultural Day underscores both FAS’s and DUT’s commitment to embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion into academic life. This year, as DUT celebrates 21 years, the university continues to champion inclusivity and honour the many cultures that make up its community, recognising that cultural awareness enhances collaboration, creativity, and student success in the sciences.
This celebration is part of DUT’s ongoing legacy of creating spaces where every culture is valued, every voice is heard, and diversity is recognized as a cornerstone of academic excellence.
