The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has taken another significant step in advancing its internationalisation and research collaboration agenda by signing a strategic partnership agreement with the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague (UCT Prague) in the Czech Republic.

The signing ceremony was led by Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement at DUT, together with Rector Prof. Ing. Milan Pospíšil, CSc. from UCT Prague.

This partnership marks an important milestone in strengthening academic and research ties between Africa and Europe, creating a platform for meaningful collaboration and shared innovation. The agreement outlines key areas of cooperation, including:

  • Collaborative research and innovation projects.
  • Student and staff mobility, such as academic exchanges, co-supervision and summer schools.
  • Joint curriculum development and micro-credentials.
  • Technology transfer and industry-engaged initiatives in emerging fields such as green hydrogen, advanced materials, sustainable manufacturing and AI-enabled process optimisation.

Professor Nemavhola expressed his appreciation to Rector Pospíšil and the UCT Prague team for their warm hospitality and shared vision for academic excellence. He was accompanied by DUT representatives Dr Samuels (International Education and Partnerships), Dr Mthombeni (Interim Director: Research and Postgraduate Support) and Dr Kabane (Senior Lecturer, Chemistry).

Speaking after the signing, Professor Nemavhola said the collaboration would pave the way for innovative joint projects and impactful research outcomes that benefit both regions. “This partnership represents DUT’s continued commitment to expanding our global footprint through meaningful collaborations that translate research into real-world solutions. Together with UCT Prague, we look forward to creating new opportunities for our students, staff and industry partners as we ENVISION2030 and beyond,” said Professor Nemavhola.

The Agreement will see the establishment of joint working groups and pilot initiatives aimed at accelerating research translation, knowledge exchange and sustainable development, reinforcing DUT’s ENVISION2030 strategy.
