DUT LECTURER DR MELANIE CLOETE WINS PRESTIGIOUS CGMA TEACHING AWARD

Durban University of Technology (DUT), Faculty of Accounting and Informatics Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management Accounting, Dr Melanie Bernice Cloete, has been honoured with the Country Gold (South Africa) award at the CGMA® Accounting Educator Awards 2025, a virtual event hosted by CIMA on 2 October 2025.

This recognition, awarded by AICPA® and CIMA®, celebrates Dr Cloete’s outstanding contribution to transformative experiential learning and her innovative approach to preparing students for a digital future. The accolade also highlights her leadership in advancing CIMA advocacy through impactful student activities and assignments, which have significantly enhanced her students’ academic and professional development.

Dr Cloete’s dedication to excellence in teaching and learning has made a profound impact on her department. Through her innovative and transformative teaching methods, she has created dynamic learning environments that connect theory and practice, equipping students with essential skills to succeed in the evolving business landscape. This vision is further advanced through the Engineering Practice Innovation Project (EPIP) teaching model, introduced by the Executive Dean of the Faculty, Professor Oludayo Olugbara, which fosters innovation, creativity, and real-world application of knowledge among students.

Reflecting on the moment, Dr Cloete shared: “It was a humbling and unforgettable experience. Although it was a virtual event, I was deeply moved by the recognition and reflected on the journey that brought me here—the challenges, the growth, and the unwavering support of my colleagues and students. This award is not just a personal achievement; it represents the collective effort of everyone who has walked this path with me.

This recognition strengthens my commitment to transformative, future-ready learning in Management Accounting—preparing ethical, industry-aligned graduates for impact.”

With over 530 applications globally, the competition was inspiring, and Dr Cloete’s achievement marks a historic first for Durban University of Technology.

The Faculty of Accounting and Informatics and the Department of Management Accounting extend their warm congratulations to Dr Cloete on this well-deserved recognition and celebrate her as an inspiring example of academic excellence and innovation.
