The Department of Human Resources Management (HRM) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted Second Annual Fun Day at the Munies Hockey Club, providing a welcome break from academic stress. This initiative was aimed to foster meaningful interactions and relationships among students, encourage teamwork and collaboration, and strengthen student-lecturer bonds and promote mental health under the theme titled: Your Mental Health Matters.
The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of esteemed external partners- Telkom, eThekwini Municipality, Vodacom, Supatrade, VW Hoopers, Redbull and aQuelle. Internal sponsors included DUT Student Housing, DUT Advanced Alumni, DUT Sports, Office of the Registrar, Centre For Social Entrepreneurship (CSE), Advisory Board members and DUT Confucius Institute. This exciting event brought students and lecturers together, engaging in thrilling games and sports like soccer, tug of war, and other games.
Dr Wiza Munyeka, Head of Department for Human Resources Management (HRM), welcomed all sponsors and students to the event, expressing his gratitude for their presence. Dr Munyeka encouraged students to unwind and have fun, stressing the importance of balancing academic responsibilities with social experiences.
“Our department acknowledges that students often face various challenges. Rest assured, you have a supportive network within our team, including friends and lecturers who are committed to guiding you through this journey. Moreover, this platform will not only provide academic support but also serve as an opportunity to connect with potential employers, opening doors to new possibilities and career advancement,” Dr Munyeka explained.
The Administrator from HRM, Nqobile Sibisi, expressed her delighted stating that her goal for the event was achieved. This year’s objective was to bring awareness on mental health and build relationships with the students. As the department, they are committed on supporting students to navigate their academic journey.
“HRM is more than just a department but a home for our students. My biggest highlight of the day was the presence of Dlala Thukzin who engaged with our students and gave away tickets for his upcoming event was such a special touch and made the day even more memorable for students,” said Sibisi.
Mrs Mercillene Mathews, a lecturer in the Human Resources Management Department, shed light on the academic structure for first-year students. “Currently, our students are enrolled in general education (Gen-Ed) modules, which will be followed by core modules in their second year. Typically, first-year students do not have the opportunity to bond with the department, but this event changes that,” she explained.
Three students from HRM, Zanele Gumede, Siphelele Ngidi, and Palesa Mthembu spoke about the importance of mental health. They highlighted its impact on wellbeing, the need to reduce stigma, and the value of seeking help. They further explained that the support from their department has been helpful with friendly lecturers, and DUT also has Counseling services. They also extended their appreciation to the organisers for conceptualising an event that bridged the gap between students and the faculty.
Students had an absolute blast engaging in various games with their lecturers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared enjoyment. The interactive sessions allowed memorable experiences, breaking down barriers and creating a relaxed atmosphere where students and lecturers could bond over shared laughter and fun activities.
