As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who will participate productively in the development of the region, country, and world. S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of DUT’s Communications team, recently spoke with DUT boxing star Sandile Gwambe to share his student experience in sports and academics, and how he embodies the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
Q: What sparked your interest in this type of sport?
A: “A boxing gym was opened in my neighbourhood so I went to have a look and took the initiative to start training there.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “There are no specific positions in boxing since it is a one man sport where you are not just representing yourself but your coach, your teammates and your university as well.”
Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “Rugby has always been number one but boxing is at the top of the list for me.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “It was the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN ) selections where I became victorious and was the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) champion in my weight class.”
Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “It’s vital because I strongly believe that DUT does not realise the amount of talent they have in sports.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “I love how Oleksandr Usyk and how he performs during his matches.”

A: “Respect, as being respectful always comes with great rewards.”
Q: Do you see a future in boxing?
A: Yes, I definitely do.”
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “I would not call myself a DUT star but just a young man trying to make it in life. I think I play a huge role in inspiring those younger than me.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “It has kept my mental health good.”
