Please note that UFC seminars are held on Wednesday for this year in order to encourage more and more students to attend these informative sessions.

Topic :            Risk Terrain Modelling for Spatial Risk Assessment.

Presenter:      Mr Chris Overall

Date:              Wednesday, 24 February 2016

Time:              12:00 to 13:30
Venue:            BS2103, L1, S2 Block, Steve Biko Campus- Entrance from gate 1 and 2.

About the Presentation

The prediction of crime has typically focussed on the place and time of the next crime rather than understanding the geographic/spatial variables that co-occur enabling the persistence of a particular crime type to occur in cities. Risk Terrain Modelling allows us to mitigate the risk of crime and violence at micro places through the identification of risky features of the urban landscape in question. This new understanding of how urban features can co-occur and function as geographic facilitators of crime allows for custodians of urban spaces such as the police and the municipality to act in reducing crime in the short-‐term and mitigate the spatial risk factors at places so they were less attractive to criminals in the long-‐term.”

About the Presenter

Chris Overall has served in law enforcement structures for 28 years, first in the South African Police Service in an operational capacity and then as a Civilian Adviser/ Analyst in the Durban Metropolitan Police Service. He has a background in Crime Mapping / Intelligence and Geographic Profiling analysis and is currently attached to the Urban Futures Centre at the Durban University of Technology as a visiting researcher. His current work focus is on geo-spatial intelligence analysis and crime mapping as a decision support system within the law enforcement domain as well as providing assistance to specialised units in the South African Police Service when required.  Chris has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from University of South Africa and a Post Graduate Diploma in Investigative Psychology from the Centre for Investigative Psychology , University of Liverpool.
