DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who will participate productively in the development of the region, country, and world. S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of DUT’s Communications team, recently spoke with DUT boxing star Simiso Hlatshwayo to share his student experience in sports and academics, and how he embodies the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: BTech Mechanical Engineering

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I initially joined the team in 2023 but I had to stop training for over a year because of family related issues. I then rejoined in 2025 where I plan to continue my sports journey.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I believe that from a young age I have always had an interest in various sports. I grew up watching wrestling on television,  however my passion is boxing.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “Boxing is a solo sport so they are no specific position, I represent the DUT team and through my participation it is helping me to reach to the top in this sport.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I’m currently interested in rugby and volleyball but I prefer volleyball.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “The biggest tournament I have participated in is the MUT Elite tournament where our DUT team came third. I also won a gold medal that was a great achievement for me.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “I believe sports does not only offer health benefits but it is also way to teach a student to be disciplined in their academics.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My parents  are my inspiration in all that I do but when it comes to boxing, Floyd Mayweather’s work ethics and charismatic personality drives me to be the version of myself.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate myself with respect and commitment as they go hand in hand in my training and my studies.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “Yes, I do see the future in this sport.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “My role can inspire others to study at DUT and experience what I am experiencing through sports.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sports had made a huge impact in my life as it has taught me to not give up in whatever I do.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “I feel capturing training drills of the various sports can be used as trailers on social media to give a glimpse of DUT’s sports codes that are available.”
