DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who contribute productively to the development of the region, country, and world. DUT Communications team member S’bonelo Dlamini recently spoke with DUT Netball star Makhosi Ncube about her student experience, balancing sports and academics, and living the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined the sport team in 2023.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I started playing netball with my sisters at school and loved the speed and excitement. My grade four coach made practices fun and encouraging, which made me fall in love with the game.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “As a goal shooter, I score goals for my team by positioning myself in the shooting circle, receiving passes, and shooting accurately. I create space, I work with my goal attack, and pressure the opposition’s defence. My role is to put points on the board and to contribute to my team’s success.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “As a netball player, I appreciate the fast-paced and dynamic nature of team sports. I’m also interested in basketball, I love the speed and agility required in basketball. The game’s physicality and competitiveness appeals to me, and I’m fascinated by the strategic plays and teamwork involved.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I played in the Telkom Netball League as part of my provincial team which is called Kingdom Stars and which was an amazing experience. It’s a huge tournament with top teams, and I loved the challenge of being part of this tournament.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “Developing students in sport is crucial for DUT as it fosters holistic development, promotes physical and mental well-being, creates opportunities, and builds community engagement. This helps to create well-rounded graduates.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model is Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard, the world’s best netball goal shooter. I admire her consistency, and leadership, watching her play the game is a masterclass.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I associate with ENVISION2030 values of respect and accountability which is vital when one is part of a team.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “I see a bright future in netball with growing popularity, investment, and opportunities for professionals. I’m excited to be part of this amazing sport.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “As a DUT netball star, I want to inspire young athletes, to promote a healthy lifestyle, and I aim   to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Sport has taught me to value teamwork, and to be disciplined. It has kept me grounded, and allowed me to be an inspiration to others.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “We should leverage social media for wider reach and create themed matches to engage audiences.”
