DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who contribute productively to the development of the region, country, and world. DUT Communications team member S’bonelo Dlamini recently spoke with DUT Football star Magoso Nqubeko about his student experience, balancing sports and academics, and living the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined in February 2025.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I grew up playing football and my family are huge supporters of the Orlando Pirates national team. Their love for the game inspired me to develop a deep interest in football from a young age. My goal is to play professionally in the Premier Soccer League.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I play the defensive midfielder position which helps the team with possession, keeping the ball and having control of the game tempo.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I love tennis and athletics because I believe being fit is the key to success.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in the Khabba Cup.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “It allows students coming from poor backgrounds to showcase their talents and to be exposed to teams as well as agents who can showcase such talent.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model is Teboho Mokoena who is a well-disciplined player. His performances are outstanding.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Transparency and excellence because I am truthful and I strive to do my best in all that I do.”

Q: Do you see a future in Football?

A: “I do see a future in football and beyond.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “My role benefits my community by inspiring young individuals to believe in their dreams, and to stay dedicated to their goals.”

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “To stay disciplined and be humble in life.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “To increase the hosting of tournaments at DUT and to obtain more sponsorship for such competitions.”
