DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aims to produce adaptive graduates who contribute meaningfully to the development of the region, country, and world. DUT Communications team member S’bonelo Dlamini recently spoke to DUT Rugby star Ntando Gumede about her student journey, balancing sports and academics, and living out the DUT Living Values.

Qualification: Bachelor of Health Sciences in Clinical Technology

Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?

A: “I joined the DUT sport team in 2023.”

Q:  What sparked your interest in this type of sport?

A: “I was going through some personal issues and my therapist advised me to try new things.

I was approached by the rugby team and when they asked if I was interested in joining, I immediately said yes.”

Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the team?

A: “I have played several positions in rugby but my current position is wing, it requires speed and finishing ability, as you are often the last player to receive the ball before aa try.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I love playing soccer and netball because I have a deep passion for both sports.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in the women’s rugby USSA in Kimberley where I was the captain of the team. I was also part of the Sharks women’s team.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “It’s important for DUT to develop students in sport, as some athletes end up being exposed to the professional side of their various sport codes.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My role model is Aseza Hele, she plays number eight for the South African women’s rugby team. I connect with her because of the passion we both have for sport.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “I identify with honesty because I believe it is central to everything I do.”

Q: Do you see a future in your sport?

A: “Yes, I do see a future in the sport particularly as a referee.”

Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?

A: “I live as proof that girls of all shapes and sizes can take part in rugby, a traditionally male-dominated sport. Through sports you gain discipline and respect, which reflect back into the community.

Q: What impact has sport made on your life?

A: “Rugby has had a good impact in my life. The sport has shaped my character and it has thought me a lot about respect, discipline and kindness.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?

A: “We  need to make better use of social media at DUT so that people can see what games we participate in.”
