DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates that will participate productively in the development of our region, country and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, DUT Communication’s team member, recently spoke to DUT Volleyball Coach, Andile Mchunu about his student journey, balancing sports and academics, and living out the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you become part of DUT Volleyball team?

A: “I became part of the DUT Volleyball team in 2016.”

Q: What sparked your interest in the DUT Volleyball team?

A: “I was attending a friendly games at Ndumiso in 2016 as a spectator, on my arrival I saw students playing but lacking confidence and after that game I went downstairs to guide them and after that they played better. They then requested me to coach them, marking the beginning of my volleyball journey.”

Q: In terms of the role you play as a volleyball coach, kindly elaborate what is entails and how it benefits the players within your team?

A: “I go far beyond what I am expected to do. I’m a coach, trainer, administrator, disciplinarian, caring parent and a counsellor. I use sport as a vehicle to enrich the lives of my players.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?

A: “I am keen in running because it’s one of the sport codes you can participate in and excel in even upon retirement.”

Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?

A: “I have participated in an interprovincial tournament.”

Q: Why is it vital for DUT to develop students in sport?

A: “Sports unites students from different backgrounds.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?

A: “My father is my role model because he taught me that nothing of value can be achieved without hard work and perseverance.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 living values and principles do you associate with and why?

A: “Accountability as I do believe I’m accountable for my actions.”

Q: Do you see a future as a volleyball coach?

A: Yes, I do see a future in this field of sport.”

Q: What impact has volleyball made on your life?

A: Volleyball has taught me discipline in all spheres of my life.”

Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport?

A: “There should be more sport orientation programmes, and recruitment drives should be held at least twice a month.”
