A: “As an intern in the Hospitality and Tourism Department at DUT, I play an integral role in supporting the department’s administrative and events functions. My responsibilities include assisting with departmental operations, supporting staff and students, and contributing to initiatives that enhance the restaurant, hospitality, and service delivery.”
Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been a proud member of the DUT community for approximately five years, having first joined the institution in 2020 when I enrolled as a first-year student. Since joining DUT and progressing to my current role as an intern, my journey has been defined by continuous academic, personal, and professional growth.”
Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?
A: “The value of integrity, supported by the principle of excellence. On a personal level, integrity guides how I present myself, make decisions, and take responsibility for my actions in life and within the DUT community. It reflects my commitment to honesty, respect, and ethical conduct in everything I do. Excellence drives my desire to consistently give my best, take pride in my work, and continually improve my skills.”
Q: What are your views on the DUT tagline: Creative. Distinctive. Impactful.
A: “It strongly resonates with my experience at the university. I see creativity in the way DUT encourages innovative thinking and practical problem-solving, both in and beyond the classroom. The word Distinctive reflects the unique culture, diversity, and sense of community that sets DUT apart.”
Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “By participating in departmental activities, seeking guidance from mentors, and reflecting on how the values translate into practice. I aim to continuously strengthen my understanding and embodiment of the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework. I intend to remain aligned with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework by engaging thoughtfully with DUT’s policies, communications, and value-driven initiatives.”
Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?
A: “I am deeply invested in achieving my goals while also giving back to my family and community. Growing up as a young black woman from a disadvantaged background, I have faced challenges that could have limited my opportunities, but I have always believed that nothing is impossible when you are determined and focused.”
Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “In my view it will benefit DUT by creating a culture where integrity, excellence, and social responsibility guide everything we do. I believe that by embedding these values across the institution, DUT will not only continue to develop skilled and knowledgeable graduates but also empower us to become responsible, value-driven individuals who can make a real impact in our communities.”
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: “In my spare time, if I am not with my son, I enjoy cooking, watching an interesting series or reading. It is a way for me to relax, recharge, and try new things outside of my studies and internship. These moments help me come back to my work and studies feeling refreshed and ready to take on new challenges.”
Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “By giving my best in everything I do as an Intern, supporting my department and DUT community at large, helping students, and making daily operations run smoothly. Beyond that, I hope to inspire others, especially young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, by showing that hard work, determination, and integrity can pay off and create real opportunities.”
Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “My daily motivation comes from three sources that are very close to my heart which are my son, myself, and my favourite Bible verse, Isaiah 41:10. My son is my constant reminder of why I work hard, he inspires me to set a strong example, to persevere through challenges, and to create a better future not just for him but for my family. I also motivate myself by reflecting on my dreams, my journey, and the goals I have set, remembering the obstacles I have overcome as a young woman.”
Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My future goals at DUT go beyond academic achievement, I want to grow as a professional, a leader, and a contributor to the university community. Through my internship I aim to develop skills that will allow me to support others and make a tangible impact on students and staff alike.”
Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “It would be to make the world a better place, helping educate and uplift others while also finding peace and happiness in my own life.”
