As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aims to produce adaptive graduates who will participate meaningfully in the development of their region, the country, and beyond. S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of DUT’s Communications team, recently spoke with DUT Football player Kwanele Nyawo about his experience balancing sports and academics and how he embodies the DUT Living Values.

Q: When did you join the DUT Football team?
A: “I joined in 2024.”
Q: What sparked your interest in Football?
A: “As a young child, I used to watch a lot of football matches on television, which sparked my interest in the sport.”
Q: In terms of the position you play, elaborate what it entails and how it benefits the team?
A: “I play as a striker, where I’m expected to score goals and help the team win matches.”
Q: Which other sports are you interested in and why?
A: “I love athletics because when I was in primary school, I participated in athletics.”
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: “I have participated in the SALGA games, SA Duma Foundation Tournament, USSA Tournament, and the DSTV DISKI Challenge, which was the biggest.”
Q: Why is it important for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “Sports help bring people together and also reduce academic stress.”
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My role model is Cristiano Ronaldo because he motivated me while I was growing up in football. He inspires me to achieve my goals and stay dedicated.”

A: “Respect, accountability, professionalism, and commitment are the values I rely on to reach my goals in my football career and academics.”
Q: Do you see a future in Football?
A: “Yes, I see my future in football, as I have big goals I wish to achieve in this sport.”
Q: As a DUT football player, how does your role benefit your community?
A: “My role benefits the community by motivating those around me to believe in themselves. It’s about working hard every day, setting goals, and having the spirit of winners.”
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: “I believe it saved me from substance abuse and from putting myself in situations that could negatively affect my life and football career.”
Q: Can you suggest ideas to attract spectators to varsity sport events?
A: “Creating campaigns where students have a voice in shaping varsity games, so they feel motivated to participate.”
