SIMPHIWE SOSIBO’S MISSION TO TRANSFORM STUDENT LIFE AT DUT

SIMPHIWE SOSIBO’S MISSION TO TRANSFORM STUDENT LIFE AT DUT

At the Durban University of Technology (DUT), leadership is not just about holding a title it is about service, impact and transformation. For 22-year-old Simphiwe Sosibo, the Student Representative Council (SRC) dedicated Project Officer, leadership is a calling rooted in community and driven by purpose.

A third-year Business Administration student, Sosibo was born and raised in Ixopo Plainhill, a close-knit community that instilled in him the values of humility, perseverance and responsibility. He completed his matric at Mariathal Combined School, where his passion for leadership and youth development first began to flourish.

Long before stepping onto the DUT campus, he was actively involved in community upliftment initiatives, working with young people and participating in programmes that encouraged education, discipline and self-development. These early experiences shaped his understanding that real leadership is about creating opportunities for others.

“When you come from a small community, you quickly realise that change does not happen unless someone takes responsibility. I decided I wanted to be that person,” said Sosibo.

At DUT, Sosibo has translated that mindset into action. As SRC Project Officer, he coordinates and supports initiatives aimed at improving student life, strengthening engagement, and ensuring that projects align with the real needs of students. Whether it is facilitating student development programmes, supporting campus campaigns, or encouraging participation in institutional activities, his focus remains clear impact over recognition.

He is particularly passionate about teamwork and collaboration, believing that sustainable change comes from collective effort.

“Leadership is not about standing in front. It’s about walking alongside others and making sure everyone’s voice is heard,” Sosibo explained.

Simphiwe also credits DUT for providing a platform that nurtures growth and leadership.

“What I love about DUT is the sense of belonging. The University creates space for students to explore their potential. My goal is to empower students through projects that make a real difference. When we work together, we all thrive,” he added.

Beyond campus, he remains committed to giving back to Ixopo and inspiring young people from rural communities to believe in their potential. He hopes to expand his impact through entrepreneurship and community-based initiatives in the future, combining his business knowledge with social development.

As DUT continues to shape globally competitive and socially conscious graduates, leaders like Simphiwe Sosibo embody the institution’s vision Creative, Distinctive and Impactful.
