Meet Philisiwe Mayeza, the newly elected Social and Welfare Officer of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Midlands Campus of the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
At just 22 years old, Philisiwe is a shining example of what it means to lead with purpose, compassion, and genuine determination. Her journey, shaped by personal challenges, meaningful growth, and a deep commitment to student wellbeing, has positioned her as one of DUT’s most promising young leaders.
Born in iXopo, eJolivet, and raised in the spirited township of Dassenhoek in Marianhill, Philisiwe’s path to leadership has been both challenging and inspiring. After completing her matric at Westville Girls’ High School in 2021, she took a gap year in 2022 due to life’s unexpected turns. Rather than allowing this to hold her back, she used the time to refocus, rebuild her confidence, and plan a clear way forward.
In 2023, she began her studies at DUT, pursuing a Diploma in Supply Chain Management, a step that unexpectedly sparked her passion for leadership.
That same year, she was elected as both a Floor Representative and Qhakaza Ladies Network Representative, roles through which she quickly became a trusted and respected student leader thanks to her empathy, warmth, and ability to connect with others.
Her leadership journey grew even further the following year when she joined the House Committee. This experience helped her strengthen her advocacy skills, deepen her confidence, and develop her voice as someone who not only listens, but truly understands the everyday challenges experienced by students.
When speaking about her role, Philisiwe explains, “I believe that every student deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported. Being a leader is not just about holding a position, it is about being a voice for those who often go unheard. I want to help create a campus that is inclusive, supportive, and empowering for all students.”
She also expresses how much DUT means to her. “I am incredibly proud to be part of DUT. This institution has helped me grow, discover my strengths, and become the leader I am today. Being able to give back to my fellow students is something I hold very close to my heart.”
Her passion for social welfare is deeply personal. “I have been in situations where I had to navigate challenges on my own,” she shares. “I know how it feels to struggle. As a student leader, I want to make sure no one feels alone or left behind. We must build a culture of care and compassion on campus, where students can thrive and reach their full potential.”
If asked to describe herself in three words, Philisiwe would choose resilient, compassionate, and driven, qualities that guide her in every step of her leadership journey.
With her vibrant energy, empathetic nature, and dedication to serving others, Philisiwe Mayeza is set to make a lasting impact on the DUT community. As she steps into this important role, she is ready to listen, support, uplift, and lead with intention.
