MBUSO MGILANE WALKED INTO DUT AS A DREAMER AND RETURNED AS AN EMPLOYEE

What started as a simple visit to the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Open Day turned into a life-changing journey for Mbuso Mgilane, who has now come full circle from being a curious high school learner to a permanent employee at the very same institution.

Originally from the Bhobhoyi area in Port Shepstone, Mgilane was still in high school when he attended the DUT Open Day in 2015. Like many learners from communities with limited exposure to diverse career paths, he had not yet fully discovered where his passion lay. That day, however, sparked something different.

Exposed to the world of Information Technology and the opportunities within the digital space, Mgilane left the Open Day inspired and motivated. “That day opened my eyes to the world of IT and the opportunities in the digital space. I realised this was something I could pursue, and from that moment, I took my studies more seriously,” he explained. He became intentional about his academic journey, putting in the effort needed to succeed in his matric year.

With determination and focus, he passed matric and stayed true to the vision he had built years earlier. In 2019, he enrolled at DUT to pursue a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and was part of the first cohort of the programme, a journey filled with both excitement and challenges.

Adjusting to university life was not always easy, but he remained committed to his goals. Residing on campus helped him build connections and find support among fellow students. Even when faced with obstacles, including the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, he persevered and stayed focused on completing his qualification.

In May 2022, Mgilane graduated, becoming the first in his family to earn a degree. This milestone was not only a personal achievement but also a moment of pride for those who had supported him throughout his journey.

Shortly after graduating, Mgilane began working at DUT, first as a Student Residence Assistant and then taking on temporary roles within Student Housing. His dedication and work ethic did not go unnoticed. In 2024, he was given an opportunity to grow further as a YES Intern within ICTS Data Analytics, gaining valuable industry experience and transitioning from student to professional.

His journey came full circle in February 2026 when he received life-changing news. He had been appointed as a permanent employee at DUT. “I could not believe it when I got the call. From attending an Open Day as a high school learner to becoming a permanent employee at the same institution, it felt like my dreams were coming true,” said Mgilane.

Mgilane believes his story proves that success is possible, regardless of one’s background. His journey reflects DUT’s commitment not only to educating students but also to nurturing and developing them beyond the classroom. The institution does not simply produce graduates; it grooms them, equips them with practical experience, and creates pathways into the world of work.

His message to young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, is simple but profound. “It is possible. With dedication, discipline, and the courage to pursue opportunities, success is within reach. Whatever opportunities come your way, grab them, work hard, stay hopeful, and do not give up,” Mgilane advised.
