DUT CHAMPIONS VOW TO UPHOLD LIVING VALUES

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently welcomed its 2026 cohort of Champions of the Living Values at the DUT Hotel School. The induction programme empowers students to grow as leaders, embrace core values, and strengthen their commitment to social responsibility.

The programme forms part of the Student Governance and Development unit’s ongoing efforts to promote effective student governance and cultivate strong leadership, ethical conduct, and active participation within the university community.

The Champions of the DUT Living Values initiative empowers students to embrace, advocate for, and lead activities that reflect the university’s core values. Through this programme, students gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to act as ambassadors, inspiring their peers to embody these values and fostering a university community grounded in integrity, respect, and excellence.

Dean of Students, Dr Clement Moreku, officially welcomed the new cohort, alongside executives and distinguished guests. He highlighted the significance of the induction, noting that the concept of a Champion is central to the DUT Way, a framework guiding the university’s philosophy and reinforcing its culture.

“The purpose of today’s programme is to encourage champions to embrace and uphold these core values, fostering a positive and inclusive campus culture. DUT’s mission is not only to graduate students but to produce adaptive, dynamic, and innovative individuals grounded in strong values,” said Dr Moreku.

Student Governance Manager, Mr Masiza Ngculu, delivered the keynote address, emphasising the responsibilities of a champion. He urged students to lead with integrity, prioritise empathy and inclusivity, and support student well-being. Ngculu highlighted the importance of student-led initiatives in addressing challenges faced by their peers, encouraging champions to build solidarity and meaningful support systems within the university.

Ms Lorna McCullogh provided an overview of the DUT Living Values and their alignment with ENVISION2030, the university’s strategic plan aimed at enhancing lives and livelihoods. She noted that Living Values serve as a moral compass guiding institutional decisions and creating an environment where students can thrive.

Student Development Officer, Dr Andile Samukele Masuku, outlined the role of the champions, describing the DUT Living Values Framework as a philosophy shaping both institutional culture and individual conduct. He encouraged champions to model these values not only on campus but also in their homes, workplaces, and broader communities.

“Through your leadership and influence, you are expected to inspire your peers and contribute to a community that thrives on integrity, respect, and excellence. Be visible, actively engage with the student community, and consistently lead by example,” said Dr Masuku.

The Ceremony reached a significant highlight when the Dean of Student Dr Moreku led the pledge, guiding the newly inducted Champions of the DUT Living Values as they formally committed to upholding and embodying the university’s core values in their leadership, actions, and everyday conduct.

In closing, Mr Ngculu expressed sincere appreciation to all who contributed to the event’s success, including organiser Ms Thokozani Sibiya and SRC President Mr Sihle Nkosi. He also congratulated the newly inducted champions, acknowledging their commitment to leading with purpose and upholding DUT’s Living Values.
