The Department of Biotechnology & Food Science at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted an orientation programme for its first-year students. The aim of the event was to support students in transitioning smoothly from high school into university life. It also provided an opportunity for new students to familiarise themselves with the academic environment, departmental expectations, and the support available to them throughout their studies.
The orientation was held at Ritson Hall on Thursday, 9 April 2026. It brought together faculty members, staff, and students in a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. During the session, students were introduced to the structure of their academic programmes, key departmental resources, and the essential skills required to succeed at university level.

Professor Feroz Swalaha, Head of the Department of Biotechnology & Food Science.
Professor Feroz Swalaha, Head of the Department of Biotechnology & Food Science, delivered the opening remarks and warmly welcomed the first-year students, acknowledging their commitment to their academic journey. He emphasised the importance of using the remaining weeks before examinations effectively and assured students of the department’s continued support through revision sessions, focused teaching, and academic guidance.
He encouraged students to develop disciplined study habits, remain consistent, and seek help when needed. He also stressed the importance of personal responsibility, urging students to take ownership of their learning and approach their studies with determination and integrity. Beyond academic achievement, he reminded students of their broader role in society and encouraged them to contribute positively to building a responsible and cohesive community.
Swalaha said, “I want you to take the responsibility of getting an education seriously. You need to understand that education is not just about learning science, but about developing your intellectual abilities and enabling you to engage with society in a way that promotes cohesion. This starts with understanding why you are here. Be clear about the goals you want to achieve and the path you will take to succeed in your chosen industry.”
Professor Suren Singh, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, also addressed the students, welcoming them to what he described as a dynamic and forward-thinking faculty. He congratulated them on reaching this important milestone and wished them success in their studies over the next three years.

He encouraged students to approach their academic journey with curiosity and active engagement. Singh said, “On behalf of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Durban University of Technology, it is a great pleasure to welcome you to a vibrant, passionate, and research-driven faculty. You have chosen a dynamic field of study that focuses on technology, health, sustainability, and innovation. Whether your interest lies in science, microbiology, genetic engineering, or bioprocessing, you have made an excellent choice, and I am confident your studies will open many opportunities for you.”
Representatives from various student support service units also addressed the students, providing guidance on resources available to support their academic and personal well-being. These included the Financial Aid Office, the Library, Student Counselling, the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), and Protection Services. Each speaker emphasised the importance of making use of these services and encouraged students to seek support whenever needed.
Students were further provided with a comprehensive overview of the academic programme for the year to ensure they fully understood their course structure and curriculum. The overview included the programme structure, module outlines, general education requirements, graduate attributes, and the First Year Student Experience (FYSE) programme.
The session aimed to equip students with the knowledge needed to plan effectively, succeed academically, and make the most of their university experience.
