DUT SPORTS IMPACT

As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) aspires to produce adaptive graduates who will contribute meaningfully to the development of the region, the country, and the world. S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of DUT’s Communications team, recently engaged with DUT Football Coach, Mr Zamokuhle Dlamini, to reflect on his journey in sport and how he embodies the DUT Living Values.

Name: Zamokuhle Dlamini
Place of Birth: Empangeni
Sport Code: Football

Q: When did you become part of the DUT Football team?
A: “In 2019.”

Q: What sparked your interest in becoming a Football coach at DUT?
A: “During my years of study at DUT, I was actively involved in football. In 2019, I realised it was time to step down as team captain and allow younger players the opportunity to showcase their talent. Additionally, the ladies’ team did not have a coach in the second semester, which motivated me to step in. From that moment, my goal became to groom players so they can gain recognition both within the institution and in professional football spaces.”

Q: In terms of your role as a Football coach, what does it entail and how does it benefit the players?
A: “For me, coaching goes beyond the technical aspects of the game. It is also about being a father or brother figure to the players. While I expose them to professional opportunities, I also emphasise the importance of balancing football and academics, as I understand the demands of student life.”

Q: Which other sport codes are you interested in and why?
A: “Hockey and netball. Hockey shares similarities with football in terms of formation and structure. As for netball, I have been exposed to the sport since my school years, which sparked my interest.”

Q: What are the biggest tournaments you have participated in?
A: “The USSA and Varsity Football tournaments.”

Q: Why is it important for DUT to develop students in sport?
A: “When I was a student, playing football served as a form of therapy. It helped me relieve stress and manage both academic and personal challenges.”

Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: “My cousin, because we share the same goals and support each other consistently.”

Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and principles do you identify with and why?
A: “Fairness and transparency. Performance is very important to me, so if I do not give players equal encouragement and opportunities, that would be unfair. Being transparent builds trust and leads to better outcomes, which is why I believe it is key to success.”

Q: Do you see a future for yourself as a Football coach?
A: “Yes, I do. My passion for football has always driven me, and I intend to continue growing in this space.”

Q: What impact has football had on your life?
A: “It has given me opportunities to travel to different provinces and meet many people, including influential individuals. These experiences have played a significant role in my personal growth and in improving my coaching skills.”

Q: Can you suggest ways to attract more spectators to varsity sport?
A: “Consistently playing quality football and achieving good results can attract more supporters. When teams perform well, people are naturally drawn to watch and support them.”
