Mongezi Langa, a Durban University of Technology Sports Union Chairperson, DUT Rugby Chairman, and Bachelor of Applied Arts in Screen Arts and Technology student, was recently appointed as a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of University Sport South Africa (USSA). His appointment reflects DUT’s strong commitment to academic excellence, sport development, and impactful student leadership.
This remarkable achievement is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for DUT. Langa’s leadership continues to elevate the university’s sporting vision and strengthen its presence on the national sporting stage.
Hailing from Msinga, KwaZulu Natal, and a rugby player himself, Langa described this opportunity as a defining step in his leadership journey within university sport.
“This opportunity will enhance my personal and professional growth by strengthening my leadership, governance, and decision making skills, while also broadening my understanding of sports administration at a national level,” he said.
He further noted that this opportunity will provide a valuable bridge between academic theory and practical experience, allowing him to gain real world insights that complement his studies.
As part of the NEC of USSA, Langa will collaborate with experienced sports administrators and student leaders from institutions across the country. This platform will enable the exchange of ideas, best practices, and innovative sporting strategies. Through these engagements, he aims to bring back insights that will strengthen structures, improve athlete development pathways, and enhance overall competitiveness within DUT sport.
This exposure not only allows DUT to align with national standards but also creates opportunities for partnerships, knowledge sharing, and growth, ultimately contributing to the elevation of sporting programmes and culture.
In his role as an assessor, he looks forward to contributing to the improvement of standards, fairness, and development within university sport, while building meaningful networks across institutions.
DUT Sports Officer, Ms Tumie Mgudu, congratulated Langa on his achievement, saying it brings great joy to the Sports Administration unit at DUT to see their vision of having university sport stars take centre stage at a national level and represent the institution in high level positions.
“We are certain that this opportunity will capacitate him with the knowledge, skills, and expertise that will enable him to give back to the university. He will guide other students on leadership skills and share strategies to strengthen our sporting codes. We wish him all the best on his USSA journey,” added Mgudu.
