AYANDA BUTHELEZI DRIVES SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH ENGINEERING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

AYANDA BUTHELEZI DRIVES SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH ENGINEERING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

At 28 years old, Ayanda Siphumelele Buthelezi from Mphondi in Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal, is using entrepreneurship, education, and innovation to create meaningful change in her community. While pursuing an impressive academic journey in Chemical Engineering, she has also established herself as a young entrepreneur committed to addressing food security, sustainability, and rural development.

Ayanda, who is set to graduate with a Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering from the Durban University of Technology (DUT), is the founder of Kwa TK Farming Enterprise, a small-scale agricultural business she established in 2021. The business focuses on sustainable crop production while creating opportunities within her rural community.

“Beyond academics, I wanted to create something that could make a practical difference in people’s lives, especially in rural communities where unemployment and food insecurity remain major challenges,” she said.

Her entrepreneurial journey developed alongside her academic career. After enrolling at DUT in 2015 for a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Ayanda went on to complete her Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering cum laude before pursuing her Master’s degree. Throughout her time at DUT, she actively participated in entrepreneurship development initiatives such as Innobiz DUT, where she strengthened her leadership, innovation, and business management skills.

She credits these opportunities with helping her realise that engineering and entrepreneurship can work hand in hand to solve real-world problems.

“My passion has always been about creating sustainable solutions. Entrepreneurship gave me a platform to apply what I learned academically in a way that directly impacts communities,” she explained.

Growing up in a rural area played a significant role in shaping her entrepreneurial vision. Witnessing the realities of poverty, limited infrastructure, and unemployment inspired her to think beyond personal success and focus on community upliftment.

Through Kwa TK Farming Enterprise, she hopes to contribute to sustainable agriculture, youth empowerment, and economic development in rural areas. She believes entrepreneurship is an important tool for creating employment opportunities and empowering young people to become active participants in building their communities.

Balancing entrepreneurship with demanding academic commitments was not always easy. During her Master’s studies, Ayanda faced financial pressures, technical setbacks with research simulations, and health challenges. In 2024, while continuing with her Master’s, she simultaneously pursued a BSc Honours in Applied Science in Water Utilisation at the University of Pretoria, which she completed in record time.

Despite the pressures, she remained committed to both her studies and her business aspirations.

“These experiences taught me resilience, discipline, and perseverance. They reminded me that success requires consistency and the willingness to keep going even when things become difficult,” she said.

Currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering at Durban University of Technology (DUT), her research focuses on wastewater treatment and sustainable resource recovery. She hopes to continue combining engineering, research, and entrepreneurship to develop sustainable solutions in the water, energy, and agricultural sectors.

Her long-term vision includes expanding her business initiatives while contributing to policy, innovation, and sustainable development in South Africa. She is also passionate about mentoring young people, particularly young women from rural communities, encouraging them to believe in their abilities and pursue opportunities despite their circumstances.

“Your background does not define your future. With determination, discipline, and purpose, it is possible to create opportunities not only for yourself, but also for others,” she said.

Ayanda’s journey reflects the growing role of young entrepreneurs in driving innovation and social impact. Through her commitment to education, sustainability, and community development, she continues to demonstrate how entrepreneurship can be used as a powerful tool for transformation.
