Qhawe Mtengu, Deputy President of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) proudly celebrated a major personal and academic milestone after obtaining his first qualification, a Diploma in Information and Communication Technology in Application Development during the DUT 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony. His graduation was held at the Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 11 November 2026.
Balancing student leadership responsibilities with academic commitments, the SRC Deputy President described graduating as a dream fulfilled and a testament to perseverance, discipline and hard work. Qhawe (23) from Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal was ecstatic when his name was called on the graduation podium and he remains grateful to his peers, family and fellow SRC members for their loudest cheers during his graduation, making his day memorable.
“This qualification means a lot to me because it represents years of sacrifice, dedication and commitment to both leadership and my studies. It has not been an easy journey, but I remained focused on my goals,” he said.
As a student leader, he played an important role in representing and advocating for students while also ensuring that he maintained his academic performance.
“There were many challenges that came with balancing SRC duties and academics, but I learnt the importance of time management, resilience and staying committed to my purpose,” he added.
He expressed gratitude to his family, fellow SRC members, lecturers and friends for supporting him throughout his academic journey.
The newly qualified DUT adaptive graduate encouraged students to remain determined despite obstacles they may encounter during their studies.
“Never give up on your dreams. Your current struggles do not define your future. Stay focused, work hard and believe in yourself,” he said.
Dr Clement Moreku, the Dean of Students at DUT congratulated the SRC Deputy President on his achievement, commending him for successfully balancing leadership responsibilities with academic excellence.
