TOP INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY STUDENT FOLLOWS IN HIS FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS

A 20-year-old, Aphiwamambo Mkhize, has embraced the Durban University of Technology (DUT) living values and principles, particularly the principle of excellence. Driven by this principle, he successfully graduated with a Dean’s Merit Award for academic excellence under the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, completing a Diploma in Information and Communication Technology in Application Development. He walked across the stage with pride at the graduation ceremony held at Indumiso Campus Hall  in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 11 May 2026.

Sharing his journey and transition at DUT, Aphiwamambo described it as both challenging and rewarding. Throughout his studies, he remained committed to academic excellence, continuously improving his skills in software development and problem-solving.

“This experience shaped me into a disciplined and goal-oriented individual, prepared to contribute meaningfully to the tech industry,” he explained.

His transition to university life was exciting but demanding, as it required him to adapt to a completely new environment and higher levels of responsibility. Over time, he successfully adjusted by staying disciplined, improving his time management skills, and remaining focused on his goals.

When asked about the key principles and values that resonate with him, Aphiwamambo highlighted excellence as the driving force in everything he does. He also emphasized DUT’s living values of integrity and accountability, explaining that he believes in consistently putting in effort, being honest in his work, and taking responsibility for his growth and success.

“Graduating with Dean’s Merit is a great honour and a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices I have made throughout my academic journey. It represents not only personal achievement but also the support I received from my lecturers, peers, and family,” Aphiwamambo expressed.

He also shared some of the challenges he faced during his studies, including managing academic pressure, meeting deadlines, and balancing personal responsibilities. Certain modules were particularly demanding, but he overcame these challenges through persistence, effective time management, and seeking help when needed.

Reflecting on his family’s reaction, he said, “My family was extremely proud and excited. Their support has been a major driving force behind my success, and this achievement is just as much theirs as it is mine.”

He mentioned that he is passionate about technology and problem-solving. His father worked in an IT-related field, which inspired him from a young age to pursue a career in technology. Observing his father’s work motivated him to follow a similar path and aspire to build something meaningful in the ICT industry.

“I planning to further my studies in the field of Information and Communications Technology to deepen my knowledge and expand my career opportunities,” Aphiwamambo explained.

He added that advancing his education will not only strengthen his technical skills but also open doors to more specialised roles within the ICT industry. His goal is to continuously grow in the field, stay updated with emerging technologies, and eventually contribute to innovative solutions that make a meaningful impact.

His long-term goal is to build a successful career in software engineering and cloud engineering, where he can develop scalable, efficient, and innovative solutions. He also aspires to grow into roles that involve designing and managing cloud-based systems and potentially venture into entrepreneurship by creating tech-driven products and services.

He advised the first-year student to stay consistent, manage your time well, and never be afraid to ask for help. He further mentioned that focus on understanding concepts rather than just passing exams and always believe in your ability to succeed.
