DEDICATION AND EXCELLENCE EARN SANELE MKHIZE DEAN’S MERIT RECOGNITION

On 12 May 2026, the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Faculty of Management Sciences celebrated academic excellence as graduates gathered to receive their qualifications. Among the standout achievers was Sanele Nkosinathi Mkhize, who distinguished himself by graduating with the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award, a recognition reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance at the DUT Autumn Graduation ceremony which took place at the indumiso Hall, today.

His achievement not only marked the completion of his Postgraduate Diploma in Management Sciences Specialising in Public Relations and Communication Management, but also highlighted his dedication, discipline, and pursuit of excellence while balancing full-time professional responsibilities.

Originally from Bulwer in KwaZulu-Natal, he moved to Pietermaritzburg in 2012 to pursue his academic ambitions at DUT. What started as an undergraduate journey in Public Relations has now evolved into a remarkable academic and professional success story.

Mkhize graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Sciences in Public Relations and Communication Management, adding yet another qualification to an already impressive academic portfolio. Having previously completed a National Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations Management at DUT, this latest achievement represents not only academic progression but also his dedication to personal and professional growth.

“This qualification means a lot to me because it came at a time when I was balancing full-time work and academic responsibilities. It reminded me that growth never stops and that commitment always produces results,” said Sanele.

Currently serving as the Public Relations Officer at Christ The King Hospital, Mkhize has built a career rooted in strategic communication, ethical leadership, and community engagement. His role requires him to communicate with compassion and integrity in a healthcare environment where clear and responsible communication can significantly impact lives.

Despite the demands of a full-time career, the 32-year-old  remains committed to his studies, often balancing professional responsibilities with late-night assignments and academic deadlines. He describes commitment as one of the DUT values that carried him throughout his journey.

His academic journey has also been strongly supported by his family, who celebrated his graduation with pride and excitement. While his parents were not surprised by his success, they remain proud of his consistency and dedication to education.

Mkhize’s passion for Public Relations began shortly after attending his first lecture in 2012. Since then, he has developed a deep appreciation for the profession’s role in storytelling, relationship-building, strategic communication, and problem-solving.

Beyond celebrating this latest achievement, Sanele already has his sights set on the future. He is currently awaiting feedback on Master’s degree applications submitted to both DUT and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, with the long-term goal of completing his PhD before the age of 36.

His ultimate aspiration is to return to higher education as a lecturer in Public Relations or Strategic Communication, where he hopes to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice.

“I want to share real-world experience with future students. I believe the best lecturers are those who remain connected to industry while shaping future professionals,” he said.
