The innobiz DUT Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation has strengthened its governance structure through the appointment of five additional Independent Non-Executive Directors, reinforcing its commitment to advancing innovation and entrepreneurship at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
The newly appointed Independent Non-Executive Directors are Ms Jaana Puukka, Dr Buntubakhe Quwe, Mr Thokozani Kubheka, Ms Nothando Mkhize, and Professor Thomas Dobbelstein. These appointments expand the Board’s composition, which now includes a strengthened mix of independent and ex officio members tasked with providing strategic oversight and guidance to the Centre.
The Board noted that the process of finalising these appointments took place over a period of time, which affected the organisation’s ability to fully execute its mandate during the interim phase. With the Board now fully constituted, innobiz DUT is positioned to enhance strategic leadership, improve governance oversight, and strengthen coordination in delivering on its innovation and entrepreneurship mandate.
The Board officially commenced its term in March 2026, beginning with a structured induction programme designed to support effective governance and operational understanding. This included an immersive tour of innobiz DUT facilities, providing members with direct exposure to the Centre’s activities, followed by a two-day governance training programme facilitated by the Institute of Directors South Africa (IoDSA). The training focused on strengthening governance competence and aligning with current best practice standards.
With its full complement now in place, the Board is expected to provide focused leadership and strategic direction aimed at accelerating innovation-led enterprise development within DUT. This includes strengthening partnerships, enhancing institutional coordination, and supporting initiatives that contribute to the University’s broader innovation ecosystem.
The Board extended its appreciation to its Chairperson, Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, for his leadership in guiding the Board through its establishment phase and ensuring its effective constitution. His stewardship has been instrumental in laying a strong foundation for the Centre’s future growth and impact.
The strengthened governance structure is expected to enhance institutional efficiency, improve decision-making processes, and unlock new opportunities for innovation-driven development within DUT.
The Board also expressed its appreciation to the DUT Council for its continued support and confidence, reaffirming its commitment to advancing the strategic objectives of innobiz DUT and contributing meaningfully to the University’s innovation agenda.
