Yashtheel Punwasi is proving that dedication, discipline, and determination can pave the way to success both in the classroom and in the workplace. At just 22 years old, the Desainagar resident has graduated Cum Laude with an Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) , During the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics Graduation Ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday, 18 May 2026.

Currently employed by the Tsogo Sun Group at Suncoast Casino as an Admin Clerk, Yashtheel describes the opportunity as a major milestone in his career. His role has allowed him to gain practical industry exposure while applying the knowledge and principles he acquired through his studies in Internal Auditing.

“I am currently working for the Tsogo Sun Group at Suncoast Casino as an Admin Clerk. This is a significant milestone for me as it is my first professional role. My responsibilities allow me to apply my internal auditing knowledge in a practical environment, which is both valuable and rewarding for my career development,” he said.

His academic journey at DUT has been one of resilience, discipline, and growth. After completing his Diploma in Internal Auditing, he continued his studies and achieved Cum Laude status in his Advanced Diploma. Throughout his studies, he balanced academic demands with personal commitments while adapting to different learning environments and maintaining high standards.

The passion for Internal Auditing developed from a strong interest in business, finance, and understanding how organisations operate. He says the profession aligns closely with his values of integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Despite already achieving academic distinction and securing employment, Yashtheel remains committed to furthering his education. He is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Auditing and plans to continue towards a Master’s degree next year. His long-term ambition is to become a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and potentially pursue a future in academia.

Reflecting on his achievement, he said graduating Cum Laude was both humbling and motivating.

“Graduating Cum Laude is an incredible honour and a moment of deep gratitude for me. It reflects not only my hard work and dedication, but also the support I have received along the way. This achievement motivates me even more to continue striving for excellence in my academic and professional journey. It serves as a reminder that consistency, perseverance, and faith can truly yield meaningful results,” he explained.

Yashtheel also credits his family’s encouragement and sacrifices as a major source of strength throughout his academic journey. Grounded by faith and driven by ambition, he views his graduation not as a final destination, but as the beginning of even greater opportunities ahead.
