Walking across the stage with pride as the first among her classmates to receive the Dean’s Merit Award, Ms Busisiwe Nomvelo Mzila celebrated a major academic milestone after graduating Cum Laude with an Advanced Diploma in Accounting. The graduation ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban on Monday, 18 May 2026.
Reflecting on her academic journey at DUT, Mzila described the experience as both demanding and rewarding. She explained that the rigorous programme strengthened not only her technical accounting skills but also her discipline and work ethic.
“My time at DUT was challenging, but very rewarding. The lecturers were knowledgeable, and the practical focus of the course prepared me well for the workplace,” she said.
Graduating Cum Laude holds deep meaning for Mzila, as it represents years of consistency, sacrifice, and determination.
“Graduating with Cum Laude is a significant achievement for me. It reflects the consistent effort and dedication I put into my studies over the past few years. I feel proud of the result and grateful for the support that helped me reach this level,” she shared.
Mzila said she strongly associates herself with the DUT living values and principles of excellence and integrity.
“Excellence has always been a driving force for me because I aimed to produce high-quality work and fully understand the material, not just pass. Integrity is equally important because I believe in doing things the right way, even when it is more difficult. These principles guided me throughout my studies,” she explained.
Like many students, Mzila faced several challenges during her studies, including balancing academic demands, personal responsibilities, and financial pressures.
“The main challenges were balancing academic demands with personal responsibilities and managing finances as a student. There were times when the workload felt overwhelming, especially when preparing for multiple assessments. However, I learned to stay organised and seek help when needed,” she said.
Her family reacted with excitement and pride upon hearing about her achievement.
“My family was very happy and proud when they heard the news. They congratulated me warmly, and it was a positive and emotional moment for all of us,” she added.
Mzila explained that her passion for accounting started at a young age. “Since I was young, I have always been interested in numbers, financial systems, and how businesses operate. Accounting offers a stable and versatile career, and I saw it as a field where I could build a strong professional foundation,” she described.
She is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and hopes to further her studies by enrolling for a Master’s degree in the near future, circumstances permitting.
Mzila aims to build a successful career within the accounting and finance sector, particularly in finance, auditing, financial management, or corporate reporting.
“In the long term, I would like to take on a senior role where I can contribute meaningfully to an organisation while continuing to grow professionally,” she added.
Offering advice to first-year students, Mzila encouraged them to remain focused and disciplined from the beginning of their academic journey.
“Stay consistent with your studies from the start. Attend all your classes, manage your time well, and do not hesitate to consult lecturers when you need clarification. Also, build good relationships with fellow students who are focused. Most importantly, keep reminding yourself why you chose this path when things get difficult,” she advised.
She would like to thank her lecturers for their guidance and her family for their continuous support and encouragement throughout her studies
