Growing up in KwasakwaMthethwa, a deep rural area and disadvantaged community located at Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal, Andiswa Goba always understood that education would be her pathway to a better future. On Monday, 18 May 2025, that dream became a reality when the 22-year-old graduated Cum Laude with a Diploma in Business and Information Management during the Durban University of Technology (DUT) 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre.
For Andiswa, graduating with distinctions is more than an academic achievement it is a symbol of resilience, sacrifice and discipline. Coming from a community where opportunities and resources are scarce, she entered university determined to change her circumstances through hard work and perseverance.
“My journey at university has been one of growth and determination, from my first year, I knew I needed to work harder in order to build a better future for myself and my family.”
Throughout her studies at Durban University of Technology, Andiswa remained focused on her goals despite the pressures that came with university life. One of her biggest challenges was adapting to online learning while managing academic pressure. However, through discipline, consistency, and a strict study routine, she refused to allow challenges to stand in the way of her success.
She credits her achievement to the values of commitment and excellence, which became the foundation of her academic journey. “Commitment helped me stay disciplined through difficult modules and tight deadlines, while excellence pushed me to always give my best,” she explained.
Andiswa also expressed gratitude to the lecturers and staff members who supported her throughout her studies, as well as the university support systems that helped her navigate challenging moments.
Behind her success stands a proud family who supported her every step of the way. She describes them as her greatest source of strength, saying they witnessed the tears, disappointments, and stress that often came with her academic journey.
“This achievement belongs to my family too because their prayers and encouragement carried me through,” she shared emotionally.
Driven by her passion for understanding how businesses operate and how information systems improve organisational efficiency, Andiswa intentionally chose to study Business and Information Management. Her academic journey does not end here. She is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Business and Information Management and hopes to one day obtain a doctorate qualification.
Her long-term goal is not only to build a successful career in business and information management, but also to uplift her community by creating opportunities, mentoring young people, and becoming a beacon of hope for others from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Offering words of encouragement to fellow students, Andiswa urged young people to remain focused and disciplined in their studies.
“Do not rest simply because you are tired rest when your work is done. Attend lectures, ask questions, use the support systems available to you, and surround yourself with people who uplift you. Dream big or go home but please do not go home,” she advised.
