TATENDA MOYO TURNS HIS TECHNOLOGY DREAMS INTO REALITY AS HE GRADUATE CUM LAUDE

Driven by a passion for innovation and a curiosity about how technology can solve real-world problems, Tatenda Moyo has turned his dreams into reality. The 25-year-old, who was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Pietermaritzburg, proudly graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology in Internet of Things from Durban University of Technology during the DUT Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday morning, 19 May 2026. His achievement marks the culmination of years of sacrifice, resilience and dedication to excellence.

Tatenda’s journey at DUT began in 2023 when he enrolled for the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology in Internet of Things. As part of a relatively new and evolving programme, he quickly learned that success would require resilience, adaptability and determination. Despite the challenges that came with being among the pioneering students in the course, Tatenda embraced every opportunity to grow both academically and professionally.

One of the defining moments of his student experience was joining the Arm Student Labs alongside his peers, where he gained valuable practical exposure in systems building and software development. He credits much of his growth to the guidance and mentorship he received from lecturers and mentors who played an instrumental role throughout his academic journey.

“Graduating with Cum Laude is more than just a personal milestone, it is a testament to the discipline and sacrifices made over the years. This achievement represents a promise kept to myself, my future and my family, who invested so much in my growth,” he said.

Tatenda fondly recalls the late-night study sessions spent with friends tackling challenging Engineering Mathematics modules, often accompanied by debates and laughter. He believes those moments not only strengthened his academic abilities but also taught him the importance of teamwork and support systems.

He says two DUT values that resonate deeply with him are Integrity and Respect. According to Tatenda, integrity ensures that one’s work remains honest and dependable, while respect creates an environment where collaboration and innovation can flourish.

The news of his Cum Laude achievement brought overwhelming joy to his family. His phone was flooded with congratulatory calls and messages, while his younger sister and aunt surprised him with graduation gifts. Seeing his parents celebrate the achievement with pride made every sacrifice worthwhile.

Tatenda is currently working as a Technology Analyst at COOi Studios, he has already begun building his career in the technology industry after starting at the company as an intern before being absorbed permanently. Looking ahead, he plans to pursue an Honours degree next year as he continues working toward his long-term goal of becoming a Solutions Architect.

Offering advice to first-year students interested in technology, Tatenda encouraged them to remain focused, seek mentorship and value the friendships they build along the way.

“Stay focused, but do not do it alone. Seek knowledge beyond the classroom and surround yourself with people who motivate and challenge you. Most importantly, attend all your lectures because every piece of knowledge contributes to the bigger picture,” he said.
