SIPHELELE SHABANGU CHARTS HER OWN COURSE AT SEA

What began as an unexpected academic path turned into a journey of passion, resilience, and remarkable achievement for 21-year-old Siphelele Angel Shabangu from Imbali Township in Pietermaritzburg. On Wednesday, 20 May 2026, Angel proudly graduated Cum Laude and received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award during the Durban University of Technology 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre, proving that sometimes life’s detours lead to the greatest destinations.

Initially, Nautical Studies was never part of Siphelele’s plan. After discovering that her first-choice programme was already full, she found herself stepping into unfamiliar territory. Unsure about what the course entailed, she decided to take a chance and research the field further. What started as uncertainty soon transformed into curiosity, and eventually into a deep passion for the maritime industry.

“I did not know much about Nautical Studies at first, but the more I learned about it, the more interested I became. Over time, I developed a real passion for the field, and now I cannot imagine myself doing anything else,” she shared.

Her academic journey at the Durban University of Technology was not without challenges. The demanding workload required intense focus, discipline, and consistency. Balancing studies with personal responsibilities often became overwhelming, especially during high-pressure periods. Yet Angel refused to allow the pressure to define her future.

Instead, she learned the value of time management, perseverance, and self-discipline. By staying focused and avoiding procrastination, she gradually overcame every obstacle placed before her.

Graduating Cum Laude stands as a reflection of the countless hours of hard work, sacrifice, and determination she invested throughout her studies. For Siphelele the achievement represents far more than academic excellence.

“Graduating Cum Laude and Deans Merits award means that all the hard work, discipline, and consistency were worth it. It reminds me that even when things become difficult, perseverance and dedication can lead to success,” she said.

Throughout her journey, Siphelele remained guided by values that resonated deeply with her, including respect, accountability, and excellence. She believes these principles helped shape both her academic success and personal growth.

Her family’s reaction to her achievement made the moment even more special. Filled with pride and joy, they celebrated not only her qualification but also the resilience she displayed throughout her journey.

“Their support has meant everything to me. Knowing that they are proud of me motivates me to keep pushing forward and striving for more,” she added.

Siphelele is now pursuing her Advanced Diploma in Nautical Studies, Angel remains focused on growing within the maritime industry. Her dream is to build a successful professional career while continuing to gain knowledge and experience in her field.

Reflecting on her journey, Siphelele hopes her story will inspire other students who may find themselves on unexpected paths.

“Sometimes things may not go according to your original plan, but that does not mean you cannot succeed. Stay disciplined, stay focused, and never give up on yourself,” she advised.
