A FOUNDATION BUILT ON FAITH AND FAMILY SACRIFICES

A FOUNDATION BUILT ON FAITH AND FAMILY SACRIFICES

For Mohammed Rizwan Ismail from Phoenix, academic excellence is far more than personal achievement, it is the culmination of faith, sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering family support.

Before reflecting on his remarkable academic success, Mohammed begins with a heartfelt expression of gratitude: Alhamdulillah. For him, every accomplishment is rooted in faith and divine guidance.

As the first member of his family to attend university, Mohammed’s journey represents a generational milestone built upon the sacrifices of his parents. He speaks with deep admiration for his mother, whose own inability to complete matric due to personal circumstances became the driving force behind her determination to secure a brighter future for her son.

“My mother made it her life’s mission to ensure I had access to the higher education and opportunities she was once denied,” he shared.

He equally credits his father as a steadfast pillar of strength who consistently prioritized the well-being and future of his children above all else.

Mohammed’s support system extended beautifully across generations. He paid special tribute to his grandmother, Razia, whose daily messages of encouragement and unwavering love sustained him, particularly during her recent illness. He also acknowledged the quiet but meaningful support of his grandfathers and younger sister, who remained one of his closest confidantes throughout his undergraduate studies.

These strong familial foundations became especially important as Mohammed navigated significant personal challenges during university. He openly shared that he pursued his studies while managing clinically diagnosed anxiety, which made the early years of his academic journey particularly difficult.

However, through resilience, institutional support, and determination, he gradually developed coping mechanisms that enabled him to overcome his anxieties and establish stability within his academic life.

Mohammed’s success did not come without extraordinary discipline and balance. His daily routine demanded immense focus and self-mastery. His mornings began with spiritual commitments dedicated to Hifz, the memorization of the Holy Qur’an, followed by intensive biotechnology lectures and laboratory sessions during the day. Evenings were devoted to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training, while late nights were reserved for advanced studying.

He expressed sincere gratitude to his Ustaad, Hafiz Naeem, for accommodating and supporting his demanding schedule throughout this period.

Mohammed’s hard work culminated in the rare distinction of graduating Cum Laude while simultaneously earning a place on the Dean’s Merit List with an outstanding final average of 82.59%.

Describing the achievement as surreal, Mohammed reflected on how far he has come since entering the Department of Biotechnology with little prior knowledge of the field.

“Over time, I developed a deep appreciation for the precision of laboratory work and molecular research,” he said.

Currently pursuing his Bachelor of Applied Science Honours in Biotechnology at Durban University of Technology, Mohammed has transitioned into advanced computational biology research.

His postgraduate research focuses on the chemoinformatics-guided profiling of silibinin derivatives as potential anti-PBP2a inhibitors against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), contributing to global efforts aimed at combating antibiotic resistance.

Looking ahead, Mohammed remains open to pursuing a Master’s degree and exploring opportunities within the international biotechnology industry.

Despite his academic success, Mohammed remains deeply grounded in a philosophy of balance, faith, and mindful growth. His advice to fellow students reflects the wisdom gained throughout his journey.

“Work hard, but also make space for rest, growth, and enjoyment. Maintaining your perspective and protecting your well-being is everything. Balance is key, and with faith, your journey will always find its true direction,” he advised.
