NTIVO CHAUKE’S COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION THROUGH CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

“I have always been passionate about engineering, problem-solving, and process innovation. I chose this field because I wanted to contribute meaningfully to industry, research, and sustainable technological development. Chemical engineering particularly interested me because it combines science, mathematics, and practical problem-solving to address real-world challenges,” he said.

Ntivo Chauke, a 23-year-old from Mtititi Plange under Malamulele in Limpopo, successfully graduated from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) during the 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony under the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The ceremony was held at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) in Durban on Friday, 22 May 2026.

“During my time at DUT, I developed both academically and personally. The university environment pushed me to think critically, work independently, and become resilient. I was exposed to practical and theoretical knowledge that prepared me for industry and research. The support from lecturers, classmates, and university structures played a major role in helping me succeed,” he shared.

When questioned about DUT living principles, he most frequently mentioned excellence, integrity, and respect. He feels that excellence is demonstrated by diligence, perseverance, and a strong will to accomplish one’s objectives. While respect fosters harmony and understanding among students and staff from various backgrounds, integrity is crucial because it develops character and professionalism.

“Graduating Cum Laude in my Honours degree brought me great joy, and I made a promise to myself to maintain that standard as I continue with my master’s studies. This time, I am aiming for a Dean’s Merit Award. Walking across the stage filled me with pride, and hearing my mother’s voice cheering made the moment even more emotional,” he expressed.

He said that his family was extremely proud and emotional when they heard the news. They have supported him throughout his journey and understood the sacrifices and hard work that went into achieving this milestone. For them, this achievement represents hope, perseverance, and the reward of never giving up despite challenges.

Sharing his interest in advancing his academic and research career, particularly in areas related to process modelling, process optimization, sustainability, and advanced engineering systems. He believes continuous learning is important for personal and professional growth.

“My career aim is to become a highly skilled engineer who contributes to industrial innovation and sustainable development. I aspire to work in industries where I can apply my technical knowledge to solve complex engineering problems, while also contributing to research and technological advancement. In the long term, I hope to mentor future engineers and make a meaningful impact in the engineering field,” he said.

He also concluded by advising first-year students not to be discouraged by challenges or setbacks, as growth often comes through difficult moments. He emphasised the importance of asking for help when needed, managing time effectively, and maintaining confidence in their abilities.
