“I have always been interested in understanding how things work, solving problems, and working with technology and innovation. Mechanical Engineering appealed to me because it combines creativity, technical knowledge, and practical application. I also enjoy designing and developing systems that can contribute positively to society,” he expressed.
Goolam Hoosen Khaleb’s passion for engineering and innovation has earned him academic excellence, as he graduated with Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. He graduated during the Durban University of Technology’s 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban on Friday, 22 May 2026.
The 24-year-old from the vibrant city of Durban is a dedicated and hardworking individual who is deeply passionate about engineering, innovation, and continuous personal growth.
“One of the highlights of my academic journey was completing my Honours research project focused on reducing vibration oscillations in moving systems using simple but effective mechanics. Achieving a Cum Laude pass is a proud moment for me and reflects the dedication and perseverance I invested throughout my studies,” he shared.
Sharing the DUT living values and principles that he strongly associates with, he highlighted excellence as a principle that resonates deeply with him because he always strives to give his best both academically and personally. He also relates strongly to the values of integrity and accountability, believing that it is important to remain honest, disciplined, and responsible in one’s work and actions. He explained that these values helped him remain committed throughout his studies and contributed significantly to his academic success.
“My family was extremely proud and emotional when they heard the news. They have supported and encouraged me throughout my academic journey, so achieving a Cum Laude pass was not only a personal achievement for me but also a moment of pride for them. Their encouragement and sacrifices motivated me to keep pushing forward even during difficult times,” he expressed.
He wants to keep developing both academically and professionally, especially in engineering fields like automation, robotics, machine learning, and intelligent systems. He thinks that going back to school will enable him to learn more and make a significant contribution to improvement in engineering technology.
“My career goal is to become a successful mechanical engineer who contributes to innovative engineering solutions and technological development. I would like to gain industry experience, continue developing my technical skills, and eventually work in areas involving robotics, automation, design, and advanced manufacturing systems. I also hope to inspire other young people to pursue careers in engineering and technology,” Goolam shared.
He is currently working at Design Group as a Design Engineering Graduate, where he assists in designing and developing fixtures and tooling used in body-in-white automotive manufacturing. His role involves working closely with automated robotic systems that help create the entire skeleton of a vehicle from start to finish.
He advised that first-year students entering the field should remain disciplined and patient with themselves. He emphasised that time management is key to success in any professional field, especially engineering, as it can be demanding.
“I would like to express my gratitude to my family, lecturers, friends, and everyone who supported me throughout my academic journey. I hope my achievement can motivate other students, especially those facing challenges, to continue striving for excellence and never give up on their goals,” he concluded.
