Joelle Ramiah celebrated an outstanding academic achievement at the Durban University of Technology’s 2026 Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre on Saturday, 23 May 2026. The Durban-born Cardiac Physiologist graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Clinical Technology, specialising in Cardiology, and also received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award in recognition of her exceptional academic performance.
For Joelle, graduating with top honours represents far more than academic success. It symbolises countless moments of perseverance throughout a journey that tested her emotionally, mentally, and professionally.
“My journey at DUT was one of growth, resilience, and self-discovery, there were moments where balancing clinical duties and academics felt overwhelming, but those experiences taught me discipline, adaptability, and confidence in my abilities,” she shared.
Drawn to the intersection between medicine, technology, and patient care, Joelle found her calling in Clinical Technology because it allowed her to combine analytical thinking with compassionate healthcare. Her fascination with cardiology stemmed from the complexity and importance of the human heart and the role precision plays in saving lives.
One of the defining chapters of her academic journey was completing her clinical training at Groote Schuur Hospital, one of South Africa’s most respected healthcare institutions. Working in such a fast-paced and high-pressure environment challenged her to grow rapidly both professionally and personally.
“The environment pushed me outside of my comfort zone daily, it shaped me not only into a better clinician but also into a more compassionate and confident individual,” she explained.
Despite the pressure that comes with healthcare studies, Joelle remained committed to excellence. Long nights studying cardiovascular physiology, preparing for practical assessments, and managing demanding clinical schedules became part of her daily routine. Through it all, she maintained the determination to succeed.
Graduating Cum Laude with a Dean’s Merit Award was therefore an emotional milestone for both Joelle and her family.
“This achievement represents every sacrifice, every sleepless night, and every moment of self-doubt that I had to overcome, seeing how proud my family was made it even more special because they witnessed every stressful study session, every early morning, and every moment where I wanted to give up but kept going anyway,” she said.
Her dedication to integrity, accountability, respect, and excellence also earned her recognition during her oath-taking ceremony, where she received an award for Respect and Integrity. Joelle believes that healthcare is not only about technical skill, but also about empathy, humility, and treating every patient with dignity and compassion.
Now working as a Cardiac Technologist for Cape Heart, Joelle continues to grow within the field she is deeply passionate about. Her work includes exercise stress testing, Holter monitor analysis, echocardiograms, and assisting within the catheterisation laboratory during diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.
Joelle plans to further her studies and continue contributing to the advancement of cardiac care. One of her immediate goals is to further develop and publish her fourth-year research thesis with SA Heart alongside her lecturer, Professor Prakachandra. She also hopes to pursue specialised training in echocardiography and electrophysiology before eventually completing her Master’s degree at DUT.
Beyond her own achievements, Joelle hopes to inspire and mentor future healthcare professionals entering the field.
“Believe in themselves even during moments when they feel overwhelmed or out of place, Clinical Technology is challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding. Stay disciplined, remain curious, and never be afraid to learn from mistakes,” she advised.
