The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is guided by the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further strengthened by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.

DUT Communications team member Waheeda Peters recently engaged with Thagen Anumanthoo, a lecturer in the Department of Horticulture, to gain insight into the Living Values Framework and its alignment with ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I am a lecturer in the Department of Horticulture at DUT, with responsibilities spanning teaching, research and community engagement.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “Since 2010, spanning 15 years and counting.”

Q: Among the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “Respect means acknowledging and appreciating our differences, our identities, feelings, beliefs, aspirations and wellbeing, along with valuing our contributions, talents and achievements.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “I see the new DUT tagline, ‘Creative, Distinctive, Impactful,’ as a strong and inspiring reflection of the university’s commitment to innovation, uniqueness and meaningful contributions to society, including the different stakeholders of the DUT family.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “By regularly engaging with institutional communications, attending relevant workshops and symposiums, and participating in faculty discussions. I will also integrate its principles into my teaching, research and community engagement activities to ensure that my work remains aligned with the university’s vision.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “The one thing most people do not know about me is that I enjoy exploring creative pursuits outside of my academic work, which helps me stay inspired and bring fresh perspectives into my teaching and research.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “It encourages students to cultivate integrity, respect and social responsibility, while also promoting innovation and critical thinking.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “I focus on my family, spirituality and the cultivation of new ideas for student projects.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I plan to make a positive impact at DUT by delivering engaging, student focused teaching that equips learners with both practical horticultural skills and critical thinking abilities. I will actively contribute to research that addresses real world challenges, particularly in sustainable agriculture and community development.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “To see my dogs in the morning. I also love seeing students succeed into professionals and future leaders.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My main goals are to grow as an effective educator and researcher while making a meaningful contribution to the institution and its community.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “My wish would be for perfect health and wellbeing for myself and those around me, as it forms the foundation for happiness, productivity and the ability to make a meaningful impact in both personal and professional life.”
