Currently completing her Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences in Marketing, Xoliso graduated Cum Laude for her Diploma in Management Sciences in Marketing at the closing ceremony of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Autumn Graduation at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday, 27 May 2026 , a milestone that reflects years of hard work, perseverance and academic dedication.
Originally from KwaQiko at Umzinto, she completed her matric at Qiko High School. Raised by her grandmother in a disadvantaged household, Xoliso described her as her greatest inspiration and pillar of strength.
“My background taught me that if opportunities are not coming to you, you must create them yourself,” she said.
Her academic journey began with a Diploma in Marketing, where she built a strong foundation in business strategy, branding and entrepreneurship. But it was in 2024 that her vision truly came to life when she founded Yamkela Beads Creation a brand dedicated to reimagining traditional Zulu beadwork in a modern, stylish way while preserving its cultural meaning.
“I wanted to celebrate African identity in a way that empowers young girls and women. Yamkela Beads Creation is more than accessories it is culture, pride and opportunity,” she explained.
Blending creativity with entrepreneurship, Xoliso transformed her passion into a growing enterprise. Her innovation and leadership have not gone unnoticed. She received the prestigious Dean of Students Award, recognising her impact within the institution, and the Entrepreneurship Award from the Department of Marketing for her business growth and originality. She also secured 4th prize in the Student Entrepreneurship Programme (SEP) competition, a moment she describes as both challenging and transformative.
“One of the toughest moments was pitching my business in front of experienced judges and defending my financial projections and long-term strategy. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it sharpened my confidence and taught me how to think strategically under pressure,” she recalls.
She recently joined IndlELLa Businesswomen, a platform that equips female entrepreneurs with advanced business knowledge, mentorship and networks.
To the DUT community, her message is clear and powerful: “Start now. Start even when you feel unready. Your background does not determine your future. Use the resources, exposure and networks that DUT provides. Protect your dream and work on it consistently.”
She also offers heartfelt advice to first-year students who dream of becoming entrepreneurs: “Focus on your academics because knowledge is your foundation. Start small but start early. Attend workshops, competitions and networking events. Entrepreneurship requires discipline, patience and resilience, success is built daily.”
Among DUT’s Living Values and principles, Xoliso resonates most deeply with Excellence, Integrity and Accountability. “Excellence pushes me to perform at my highest level. Integrity guides how I run my brand with honesty. Accountability reminds me that true success requires ownership of your growth,” Dlamini added.
Her long-term vision is bold yet purposeful: to grow Yamkela Beads Creation into a sustainable brand that not only celebrates culture but creates meaningful opportunities for other young women to thrive in entrepreneurship.
