DUT IMPACT

Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored on five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect, and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion, and excellence.

DUT Communications team member, Phiwayinkosi Sibiya, recently engaged in a conversation with Ms Nokuthula Hlengwa, Executive Secretary to the Acting DVC: People & Operations, to explore the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.

Q: Kindly tell us about your role at DUT?
A: “I am the Executive Secretary to the Acting DVC: People & Operations at DUT, providing high-level administrative, governance, and operational support. I coordinate executive workflows, manage committee and governance submissions, and facilitate communication across the People & Operations Division to ensure effective decision-making and alignment with institutional priorities.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?
A: “I have been part of DUT since 2021.”

Q: Among the ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you most associate with and why?
A: “Among the ENVISION2030 Living Values, I most associate with Professionalism. In my role as Executive Secretary to the DVC: People & Operations, professionalism is essential in how I manage executive responsibilities, engage with stakeholders, and handle sensitive information.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?
A: “I view it as a strong reflection of the institution’s strategic direction and identity.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?
A: “By actively engaging with institutional communications, attending relevant workshops and presentations, and keeping up to date with policy and strategy documents issued by the University.”

Q: What is one thing people may not know about you?
A: “Most people don’t know that I am a travel enthusiast. I am always planning my next adventure, and I love exploring new places, having fun, and meeting new people.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?
A: “It will help create a shared, values-driven culture at DUT.”

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
A: “I enjoy spending quality time with my family, as I am very family oriented.”

Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?
A: “As an Executive Secretary, I aim to make a positive impact by ensuring efficient coordination and strong governance support, while also mentoring other secretaries to promote professionalism and teamwork.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?
A: “Treat everyone with the same respect and professionalism you would give your line manager, because you never know who your future leader might be.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?
A: “My goal is to continue growing professionally while adding greater value to the institution. I am also committed to continuous learning and development through training and mentorship opportunities to enhance my skills.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?
A: “Good health, happiness, and continued growth for myself and my family. Kanye nemali eningi.”
