The Durban University of Technology (DUT) is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU).
Professor Matsha-Erasmus was a distinguished scholar, visionary leader and tireless advocate for higher education. Throughout her career, she championed academic excellence, transformation and the advancement of health sciences education, making an impactful contribution to the development of South Africa’s higher education sector.
Her leadership was characterised by a commitment to empowering students, strengthening institutions and expanding opportunities for future healthcare professionals. Her influence extended well beyond her own university and earned her the respect of colleagues across the academic community.
We join universities across the country in reflecting on the significant role that Professor Matsha-Erasmus played in shaping the future of higher education and in improving the lives of countless students and graduates.
