Durban University of Technology (DUT) has officially launched the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, which is anchored in five core values: transparency, honesty, integrity, respect and accountability. These values are further supported by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence.

DUT Communications team member Waheeda Peters recently engaged in a conversation with Mr Muhammad Faiz Ahmed, Administrative Assistant in the Department of Radiography within the Faculty of Health Sciences at DUT, to explore the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.

 Q: Kindly tell me about your role at DUT?

A: “I currently serve as an Administrative Assistant in the Department of Radiography within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Durban University of Technology. My role is diverse and involves supporting the academic and operational functions of the department, including procurement, financial administration, student support, clinical placement coordination, asset management, and administrative planning. I work closely with staff, students, suppliers, and various university departments to ensure that the department operates efficiently and that our students receive the support they need to succeed.”

Q: How long have you been a member of the DUT family?

A: “I joined the DUT family in June 2017 as an intern in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The internship provided me with a strong foundation and valuable experience, which eventually led me to join the Department of Radiography in April 2019. Looking back, it has been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I am proud to have been part of the DUT family for over nine years, growing both personally and professionally along the way.”

Q: Amongst the mentioned ENVISION2030 Living Values and Principles, which one do you mostly associate with and why?

A: “I associate most strongly with integrity. To me, integrity means consistently doing the right thing, being accountable for my actions, and maintaining professionalism even when no one is watching. It builds trust, strengthens relationships, and creates a positive working environment where colleagues and students can rely on one another. These are qualities I strive to demonstrate in my daily work.”

Q: What are your views on the new DUT tagline: Creative, Distinctive, Impactful?

A: “I believe the tagline perfectly reflects the direction in which DUT is moving. Being creative encourages innovation and new ways of solving challenges. Being distinctive highlights our unique strengths as a University of Technology and being impactful reminds us that everything we do should positively influence our students, communities, and society. It inspires every staff member to contribute meaningfully towards the University’s vision.”

Q: How are you planning to keep abreast with the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework?

A: “I intend to continue familiarising myself with the Living Values Framework by participating in institutional engagements, Reading University communications, and, most importantly, applying the values in my everyday work. Living the values through my actions is the best way to contribute to embedding the framework within our department.”

Q: What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

A: “I would say that humility is one of the values that defines me. I don’t believe anyone is above another, and I try to approach every person with respect and an open mind. I value learning from others, remaining grounded, and allowing my actions to speak louder than my words.”

Q: In your opinion, how will the ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework benefit DUT?

A: “The ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework provides a shared foundation that unites staff and students under common values and principles. It encourages accountability, professionalism, respect, integrity, and excellence, creating a positive institutional culture where collaboration and innovation can thrive. By living these values every day, DUT will continue to strengthen its reputation, enhance the student and staff experience, and make a meaningful impact on society.”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and keeping active through regular exercise. I have always had a passion for motorsport and am a dedicated car enthusiast, with a particular interest in spinning, racing, and automotive performance. I am also a die-hard Real Madrid supporter and a passionate football fan. Whether it’s watching a match or following motorsport, I enjoy the excitement, discipline, teamwork, and pursuit of excellence that sport represents.”

 Q: How do you plan to make a positive impact at DUT?

A: “I believe meaningful impact starts with excellence in the work entrusted to you. My goal is to continuously grow, master my current responsibilities, and always look for opportunities to improve the way we serve our students and colleagues. Having already obtained three qualifications through DUT and currently pursuing my fourth qualification, a Master’s degree, I believe continuous learning equips me with the knowledge and skills to make an even greater contribution. As I continue to grow professionally and academically, I hope to contribute innovative ideas, support those around me, and play a meaningful role in advancing DUT’s vision of being a creative, distinctive, and impactful university.”

Q: What is your daily motivation?

A: “My greatest source of motivation is my faith. Prayer gives me strength, purpose, and direction every day. I believe that without my Creator, I am nothing, and it is through prayer that I find the resilience, humility, and determination to overcome challenges and always strive to become a better person, both professionally and personally.”

Q: What are your future goals at DUT?

A: “My long-term goal at DUT is to continue growing both professionally and academically. While I currently serve in an administrative role, I aspire to transition further into the academic environment, where I can contribute more directly to teaching, research, and student development. I am committed to continuous learning and professional growth, and I hope to use my experience, qualifications, and passion for education to make a meaningful contribution to the University and help shape the next generation of graduates.”

Q: If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

A: “My one wish would be for the world to become a kinder and more compassionate place. I hope people will treat one another with greater respect, empathy, and understanding, choosing goodness over negativity. I believe that even the smallest acts of kindness have the power to change lives and create a better future for everyone.”
