S’bonelo Dlamini, a member of the DUT Communications team, recently sat down with DUT volleyball star Sibongakonke Xaba to discuss his sporting journey, what inspired his passion for volleyball, and how he embodies the DUT Living Values through his participation in university sport.

When did you join the DUT volleyball team?
A: “I joined the DUT volleyball team in 2024. It was the perfect opportunity to challenge myself and represent the University.”
What inspired your passion for volleyball?
A: “My friends introduced me to volleyball. Playing with them made me appreciate the teamwork and energy of the game, and that’s what motivated me to continue.”
What position do you play and what role does it fulfil within the team?
A: “I play as an Outside Hitter. An Outside Hitter is responsible for attacking, receiving serves and blocking. The position is important because it helps create attacking opportunities while also strengthening the team’s defence.”
Are there any other sports that interest you?
A: “I’m also interested in athletics and football. Athletics helps develop speed and endurance, while football improves teamwork and decision-making under pressure.”
What has been the highlight of your volleyball career so far?
A: “The biggest tournament I have participated in so far is the USSA Championships. I have not yet had the opportunity to compete in other major tournaments in South Africa, but I hope to do so in the future.”
Why is it important for DUT to invest in student sport?
A: “Developing students through sport is important because it builds character. Sport encourages discipline, leadership and teamwork, which are qualities that DUT wants to instil in graduates who contribute to society.”
Who is your sporting role model?
A: “My role model is Earvin N’Gapeth from France. I admire how creative and confident he is on the court. He plays with passion and shows that you can be unique while still being successful.”

A: “I connect most with Excellence, Integrity and Respect. I strive for excellence in everything I do, I believe in playing with integrity, and I show respect to my teammates, coaches and opponents.”
What are your future aspirations in volleyball?
A: “Yes, I see a strong future in volleyball. I would like to play in other provinces to gain more experience and learn different playing styles. Exposure to new teams will help me grow.”
How do you hope to inspire your community through sport?
A: “My role benefits my community by showing young people that they can balance academics and sport. I want to be proof that with hard work you can represent your University and come from anywhere.”
What impact has volleyball had on your life?
A: “Sport has had a big impact on me. It has taught me discipline, confidence and how to manage my time between academics and training. It has also given me a support system and lifelong friendships.”
How can universities attract more spectators to varsity sport?
A: “Establish a culture of institutional honour by creating opportunities for students, staff and alumni to actively contribute to, advocate for and champion the institution through meaningful engagement and strategic promotional initiatives.”
