Siphosakhe Sibiya, a second-year student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), has demonstrated that determination, discipline and resilience can lead to remarkable success after claiming first place in the men’s 8 km cross-country race at the eThekwini District Championships. The event, hosted by Hollywood Athletics Club, took place at the challenging Burman Bush Nature Reserve in Durban on Saturday, 25 July 2026.
The 19-year-old from Gxushaneni Village in eMsinga, Tugela Ferry, is studying towards a Diploma in Management Sciences: Business Administration in the Faculty of Management Sciences. His victory has earned him a place at the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Championships, which will be held in Richards Bay on 1 August 2026, where athletes will compete for selection to represent the province at the national championships.
Although he has only been competing at district level for a year, Siphosakhe made an immediate impact by winning gold in his first appearance at the eThekwini District Championships. Reflecting on his achievement, he said crossing the finish line first was both emotional and rewarding.
“Winning this title made me very happy and excited because it was my first time participating in the eThekwini District Championships. Walking away with a gold medal showed me that success is not about how long you have been competing, but about what you deliver on the day,” said Siphosakhe.
The championships brought together the district’s top athletes competing for provincial qualification. The demanding 8 km race required competitors to combine endurance, speed and tactical race management.
“The 8 km race is not something anyone can simply wake up and do, especially on such a challenging route. You need endurance, speed and the ability to manage your pace while saving enough energy for a strong finish. I am incredibly proud of what I achieved,” he added.
Siphosakhe credits much of his development to his coaches, Mr Thubalethu Phaku and Mr Khulekani Gamede, who encouraged him to compete and have guided his progress over the past year.
Preparing for the championships required months of intensive training, personal sacrifice and careful time management as he balanced his academic commitments with athletics.
“There were times when my classes clashed with training sessions, but my coach always made sure I attended my lectures first before completing my training programme. Whenever I felt discouraged or lazy, my coaches reminded me of the goals I was working towards, and that kept me motivated,” he said.
Despite feeling nervous before the race because of the large crowd of supporters, Siphosakhe drew inspiration from the support he receives from the University, his coaches, teammates, friends and family.
“With 300 metres left before the finish line, I gave everything I had. I knew the pain was temporary, but the victory would last forever. DUT has made it much easier for me to balance academics and athletics. The University provided transport to the competition, while my coaches constantly reminded me of my abilities, even when I doubted myself. My teammates motivated me during training and supported me throughout the race. Although my family was far away, they called me before and after the race to encourage me,” he said.
His coach and DUT Sport Officer, Mr Thubalethu Phaku, congratulated Siphosakhe on his outstanding achievement and wished him every success in the competitions ahead.
“Siphosakhe has consistently demonstrated an exceptional work ethic and a willingness to push beyond his limits in both training and competition. His victory reflects not only his individual dedication but also the principles of excellence and commitment that we strive to instil in our student-athletes at DUT. We are incredibly proud of his accomplishment and have every confidence that this is just the beginning of many more successes. I encourage him to remain focused, humble and committed as he continues to represent DUT with excellence,” said Mr Phaku.
Looking ahead, Siphosakhe has set his sights on representing KwaZulu-Natal and ultimately South Africa on the international stage.
He believes athletics has equipped him with valuable life skills, including discipline, hard work, patience and time management, which will benefit him both in his studies and future career.
Siphosakhe hopes his journey will inspire other young people to believe in themselves and make the most of every opportunity.
