The Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted its inaugural Legacy and Impact Gala Dinner at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), bringing together alumni, donors, partners, staff, students and friends of the University for an evening celebrating generosity, collaboration and the impact of investing in education.
Hosted by the Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit, the gala was held under the theme, “People | Partnerships | A Brighter Tomorrow”, highlighting the important role that relationships and partnerships play in creating opportunities for students and supporting the University’s growth.
The evening provided an opportunity to recognise individuals and organisations whose contributions have supported student development, alumni engagement and institutional advancement. It also showcased some of the initiatives made possible through philanthropy, alumni involvement and strategic partnerships.
In his welcome address, delivered on his behalf due to an unforeseen emergency, Mr Zwakele Ngubane, Director: Advancement and Alumni Relations, reflected on the importance of relationships in strengthening the University and its contribution to society.
He highlighted the role of donors, alumni and partners in supporting current and future generations of students and contributing to the University’s strategic objectives.
The programme featured presentations on the work of the Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit, as well as testimonials from beneficiaries who shared how support received through advancement initiatives had influenced their educational journeys and opened new opportunities.
A key highlight of the evening was the recognition of donors and partners whose generosity continues to contribute to student development and institutional advancement. Certificates of appreciation were presented to acknowledge their contribution and ongoing support of the University.
The gala also showcased DUT’s growing alumni engagement portfolio, which includes initiatives such as the AlumBiz Fund, Alumni Mentorship Programme, Alumnus of the Month, DUT Connect Magazine, DUT RISE (DUT Readiness Industry Skills Enhancement Programme), the Graduate Employability Survey and alumni fundraising initiatives.
These programmes provide opportunities for alumni to remain connected to DUT and contribute to the development of current students and graduates through mentorship, entrepreneurship, professional development, fundraising and other forms of engagement.
Addressing guests during the programme, Ms Ronelle Lyson, Coordinator: Alumni Relations, emphasised the important role alumni continue to play in the University’s development.
“Our alumni are among our greatest ambassadors. Through their leadership, mentorship, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and professional achievements, they continue to contribute meaningfully to the University’s vision and to society at large. Together, we are creating opportunities, building legacy and making a lasting impact,” she said.
Ms Lyson said alumni engagement extends beyond graduation, with the Alumni Relations portfolio focused on creating meaningful opportunities for graduates to remain connected to DUT and contribute to the success of current students and the wider University community.
The gala also reflected DUT’s ENVISION2030 strategy, which positions the University as a people-centred, engaged and innovative institution that contributes to societal development. The evening demonstrated how collaboration between the University, alumni, donors, industry partners and communities can contribute to this vision.
Beyond the formal programme, guests had an opportunity to network, reconnect and build relationships while celebrating the achievements of the DUT community. The evening concluded with dinner, entertainment and fellowship.
The inaugural DUT Legacy and Impact Gala Dinner provided a platform to celebrate those who continue to invest in the University’s people and purpose. It also highlighted the opportunities that can be created when the University and its stakeholders work together to support education, student success and societal development.
The Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit extends its appreciation to all sponsors, donors, partners, alumni, staff members and guests who contributed to the success of the gala and continue to support the growth of the DUT community.
