As part of its ENVISION2030 strategy, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is committed to producing adaptive graduates who contribute meaningfully to the development of the region, South Africa and the world. Through sport, the University continues to develop discipline, leadership, teamwork and resilience, while promoting the holistic development of students both on and off the field.
Sompisi Ntuli, a member of the DUT Communications team, recently sat down with DUT Dance star Ayanda Ngcobo to discuss his sporting journey, what inspired his passion for dance and how he embodies the DUT Living Values through his participation in university sport.
Name: Ayanda Thandolwethu Ngcobo
Place of birth: Newcastle
Sport code: Dance
Qualification: Diploma in Management Sciences: Human Resources Management
Q: When did you join the DUT sport team?
A: I joined the DUT sport team in 2024.
Q: What sparked your interest in dance?
A: My interest in dance comes from my creativity and passion for using movement as a form of expression. Dance allows me to express emotions, thoughts and actions in ways that words sometimes cannot. It gives me the freedom to communicate through my emotions, thoughts and body.
Q: In terms of the role you play, what does it entail and how does it benefit the team?
A: I see myself as a supportive team member who brings experience in different dance styles. I am able to adapt, be innovative and draw from my knowledge of different dance forms. This allows me to contribute to high-impact performances as part of the team, while also being able to represent DUT and perform individually when required.
Q: Which other sports are you interested in and why?
A: I am also interested in gaming and I play games such as EA Sports, Call of Duty, Tekken and Fortnite. I have also started streaming. Gaming teaches you skills such as patience, strategy and the ability to think on the spot and make decisions in different situations.
Q: What is the biggest tournament you have participated in?
A: The biggest competitions I have participated in are USSA Dance Sport and Red Bull Dance Your Style.
Q: Why is it important for DUT to develop students through sport?
A: Sport teaches us more than just how to perform well. It develops qualities that we can use in the outside world, including communication, collaboration, networking, stress management and discipline. Developing students through sport can therefore also prepare them for real-life experiences in the workplace and in organisations.
Q: Who is your role model and why?
A: My role model is the artist YoGirlTbk, who is a fun-loving and creative dancer. She has shown how to challenge social norms and pursue dance confidently. She has also ventured into music while remaining disciplined in developing her craft. I admire how she remains loving and family-oriented while working hard to build a successful career despite the challenges she has faced along the way.
Q: Which ENVISION2030 Living Values and principles do you associate with and why?
A: I associate with compassion and commitment. My experiences have shown me that we all need compassion and sometimes a little help to get where we are going, as well as understanding from others. Commitment is equally important. Even when we encounter obstacles, dead ends or failure, it is important to get back up, dust yourself off and remain committed until you achieve your goal.
Q: Do you see a future in your sport?
A: Yes, I do. There are many opportunities in dance, including becoming a choreographer, performer, dance studio manager or event organiser. There are also opportunities to compete at world championship level and to become a coach who helps others develop their skills.
Q: As a DUT star, how does your role benefit your community?
A: Through dance, I contribute entertainment at games, events and other activities. Performances can also draw people to events and create opportunities for others to develop and refine their skills in dance, creativity, musicality and performance.
Q: What impact has sport made on your life?
A: Sport has given me a place to grow, gain experience and develop knowledge. It has also given me confidence in areas where I previously lacked it.
Q: Can you suggest some ideas to attract spectators to varsity sports?
A: I think there should be more activations before games, with performances incorporated into matches. Advertising and greater promotion of varsity sports could also help attract more spectators.
