DUT CELEBRATES COMRADES MARATHON RUNNERS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently honoured staff members, students and alumni who participated in the 2026 Comrades Marathon (Up Run) during an awards ceremony held at the DUT Hotel School. The event was coordinated by the Employee Relations and Wellness ambit to celebrate the achievements and dedication of the University’s runners.

The programme was directed by Ms Zamazulu Nyawose, who welcomed guests and congratulated the runners on their successful participation in the world-renowned Comrades Marathon. Ms Nyawose highlighted that 28 runners were on the starting line of the 2026 Comrades Marathon, with three earning prestigious silver medals.

Coach Thuso, who has been a valuable support structure for the DUT Athletics Club (DUT AC), shared his personal experiences as a Comrades Marathon runner. Reflecting on both the rewarding and challenging moments he has encountered throughout his running journey, he emphasised the importance of thorough preparation, discipline and commitment. He also commended the runners for taking on what is widely known as the ‘Ultimate Human Race’.

Runners Mthobisi Ntuli and Steve Mkhize reflected on their experiences during the marathon and expressed their appreciation for the support they received from Coach Thuso throughout their preparation and on race day. They also applauded the camaraderie among club members and noted the improvements compared to previous races.

Ms Nobahle Mncube, who recently joined the DUT AC, compared her experience at the club with that of her previous athletics club. She praised the support and encouragement she has received since joining DUT AC. Participating in her sixth Comrades Marathon, Ms Mncube shared her commitment to continuous improvement and her desire to contribute to the growth and success of the club.

Speaking alongside Ms Mncube was Mr Khayelihle Ngubane, who applauded the consistent support and exceptional treatment he has received from the club. He highlighted the culture of inclusivity, belonging and care that characterises DUT AC and contributes to a positive environment for all members.

The ceremony was attended by members of the University Executive Management, including Mr Victor Mothobi, Senior Director: Human Capital Services; Dr Maditsane Nkonoane, Registrar; Dr David Mohale, DVC: People and Operations; Mr Siboniso Shabalala, Chief Financial Officer; Mr Mxolisi Msomi, Director: Employee Wellness and Relations; Mr Charles Sehlogo, Director: Protection Services Unit; Mr Khulekani Shabalala, Acting Senior Director: Real Estate Management Unit; and Mr Bongani Yengwa, Manager: Sports Administration and Sports Recreation.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Mohale congratulated the runners and encouraged more staff members to join the renowned DUT AC. He also highlighted the dedication of DUT supporters who camp along the route and cheer on participants during the Comrades Marathon. Dr Mohale thanked the runners for their intentional contribution to enhancing DUT’s reputation and expressed his desire to see DUT AC continue to grow from strength to strength.

Towards the end of the programme, Mr Mxolisi Msomi, Director: Employee Relations and Wellness, presented recognition awards to the runners.

In conclusion, Dr Nkonoane delivered the closing remarks. In his brief yet insightful address, he encouraged the runners to take more photographs and allow DUT supporters to document their journey, thereby helping to promote DUT and showcase the achievements of its athletes.
