About the Presentation
This presentation is based on my book Waves of Change: Globalisation and Seafaring labour Markets (2016: HSRC Press). Over 90 per cent of the goods we use – from our smartphones to the fuel in our cars – are transported by ships. The cargo shipping industry is the most globalised industry in the world, yet we know very little about the context in which these ships operate or the ways in which seafaring labour is organised. Drawing on evidence from South Africa and the Philippines, I will provide an account of globalisation, seafaring labour markets and the state that allows us to understand how processes of globalisation unfold in this industry. I will show that globalisation does not always mean a ‘race to the bottom’ for workers: labour solidarity and interventionist states shape globalisation as much as ship owners do. This has important implications for broader understandings of work, labour markets, technology and the ways in which the geographies of labour and capital are reconfigured. Scholars, policy makers, students and those with a general interest in globalisation and labour will find this presentation of some interest as it provides a revelatory account of an industry about which little is generally known.

About the Presenter
Shaun Ruggunan has a Ph.D. in Industrial, Organisational and Labour Studies. His work has focused on three areas, the global transformation of seafaring labour markets, the changing nature of professional work in South Africa and the need for a critical management studies approach in teaching human resources management. Ruggunan has published in these areas in Maritime Management and Policy, Human Resources Development International, Human Resources for Health amongst other journals. His work on global labour markets was one of the first South African scholarly attempt to understand how seafaring labour markets are configured and reconfigured due to the influence of labour market institutions including organised labour. His work has made inputs into maritime policy for seafarer human resources development in South Africa. Shaun is currently a senior lecturer in Human Resources Management at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. Email:ruggunans@ukzn.ac.za
