Dear friends of the UFC,
You may remember that we had to cancel the seminar some few weeks back due to the closing of DUT campuses. We are pleased to confirm that academic activities have resumed at DUT. Please join us for Julie Frederikse’s seminar presentation entitled ‘Non-racialism in South African history: in words and pictures’.
PRESENTER: Julie Frederikse
TOPIC: “Non-racialism in South African history: in words and pictures”
DATE: Wednesday, 19 October 2016
TIME: 12H00-13H30
VENUE: Steve Biko Campus – DUT, UFC offices, S2 Block, Level 4, Room DP4.01B (UFC Common Room). Entrance Gate 1 & 2. 79 Steve Biko Road
Abstract – Julie Frederikse will discuss the approach that gave rise to her book on non-racialism and her previous works, which emerged from her work as a journalist. She will also speak about her oral history work. The more than 100 interviews she conducted with South African political activists and her collection of photos, newspaper cuttings, advertisements, flyers, posters, badges, stickers, etc. formed the original core of the South African History Archive at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. She will discuss ways that ordinary people can contribute to archiving our country’s history, as well as her work across different forms of media, including radio, print and film.
Biography: Julie Frederikse is the author of The Unbreakable Thread: Non-racialism in South Africa, newly reprinted in a commemorative 25th anniversary edition by the South African History Archive. She worked as a journalist, covering the anti-apartheid struggle, in the 1980s. In her books she pioneered a kind of “mashup” style, mixing words and images, with oral history interviews, historical documents, photos and media images. She is now a film producer and scriptwriter, and co-founder of Durban’s Vuleka Productions. She co-produced and co-wrote the award-winning feature film, Izulu Lami, directed by Madoda Ncayiyana. Her other books on southern African politics include None But Ourselves: Masses vs Media in the Making of Zimbabwe and South Africa: A Different Kind of War. Her fiction works include The Diary Without a Key, South African Children’s Book of the Year, and The Diary That Got Me In Trouble. Frederikse has a BA in Communications from Cornell University and studied documentary filmmaking at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
