A Celebration of the Remarkable South African Woman

A Celebration of the Remarkable South African Woman

The Durban University of Technology’s Student Counselling Centre will once again celebrate the remarkable women of South Africa as well as pay tribute to those who fought for human rights.

This afternoon (Wednesday August 7, 2013), the Centre will host its annual Women’s Day celebration themed: Women Overcoming Obstacles at the Cane Growers Hall, DUT ML Sultan Campus.

This year’s event is aimed at encouraging female students at the University to never give up and to always look for solutions to the challenges they encounter in their day-to-day experiences. Radio personality Phindi Gule who is also a businesswoman and athlete – who completed her first Comrades Marathon last year – will deliver the keynote address at the event. Professor Nqabomzi Gawe; DVC: Institutional Support at DUT will also deliver a keynote address in accordance to the theme.

South African history tells of the strength of women. One particular event is the Defiance Campaign where women from different races stood united against the pass laws which were part of the draconian apartheid regime. While there has been much progress in the emancipation of women, they (women) continue to face challenges, including abuse, in the current democratic SA.

The event takes place at 11h30 for 12h00 today.
