All Humans Are Equal, Says Indian Humanitarian Shri Bhandare

The Durban University of Technology had the privilege of hosting a lecture by His Excellency Shri Murlidhar C Bhandare, the Governor of Orissa, India.
Held at the Ritson Campus Hotel School yesterday (21 May 2012), the lecture was centred on justice, diversity and equality.
Vice Chancellor and Principal Professor Ahmed Bawa welcomed the Governor saying he had no doubts that the lecture would be insightful. “We have a lot to learn from the Governor. He is a highly experienced individual with strong views on women’s rights. I have no doubt that we are in store for a very good afternoon,” said Prof Bawa.

Other dignitaries who were in attendance were DUT Council Chair Dr Reddy, Chancellor Judge Vuka Tshabalala and Miss Ela Gandhi.

Upon taking the podium, Shri Bhandare insisted that he preferred not to be referred to as a special guest because he firmly believes that all humans are equal. With that, the Governor’s humanitarian nature shone.

“What is meant by equality?” he asked, “this equality means the right to equal dignity.” This means no human should live in absolute poverty, said Shri Bhandare. He said he is not against the rich getting richer but his concern is with the poor getting poorer. According to him, everyone has a right to live a healthy lifestyle, which includes basic needs such as food, water and sanitation as well as electricity.

Making a comparison between South Africa and India Shri Bhandare said both states underwent similar circumstances in history. The two democracies are now driving towards a common goal: to have justice, equality and diversity. The three are interlinked, he said.

Just like South Africa, Shri Bhandare said India’s cultural diversity make it a diverse nation. “A diverse society to me is like a rainbow. It is the beauty of society, the beauty of every human being, the beauty of happiness, health, joy and education. Whether you are at the top or bottom, the illumination is the same,” he said.

This also refers to equality between men and women. The world is now governed by brain power and not physical power. The old mentality of disregarding women and viewing them as inferior is gone. Just like men, women have the right to education and other opportunities, Shri Bhandare said. He said he was impressed that SA has improved on this regard.

The Governor said he felt an “instant brotherhood” in South Africa.
