Animal Cruelty Must Stop, says Chad Le Clos

Animal Cruelty Must Stop, says Chad Le Clos

There are over 1000 rhinos born every year in South Africa (SA) but the high prevalence of rhino poaching in the country still places this species under threat of extinction.

This year alone, over 600 rhinos have been poached in SA which translates into a 60% decrease in the rhino population.

The Programme of Graphic Design at the Durban University of Technology joined forces with Wildlands Conservation Trust on an anti-poaching campaign which has seen top SA celebrities becoming ambassadors for this cause.

Graphic Design students have been involved with this project by designing and painting rhino sculptures for the different celebrity ambassadors.

Swimmer and gold medallist Chad Le Clos revealed his rhino sculpture at the King Shaka International Airport on Monday (19 November 2012). The young sports star said he felt honoured when Wildlands approached him to be an ambassador of this great initiative. “Rhino poaching has become a serious issue in this country and it must stop. Animal cruelty is ridiculous and it must stop,” Le Clos emphasised.

His sculpture was designed by third-year graphic design student Carla-Leigh Zaidy who also designed Ray Phiri’s rhino a few weeks ago. Zaidy said it has been a great journey and she is proud of her work.

Every detail on the rhino sculpture tells a story about Le Clos. There are gold rings which represent the gold medals he won at the 2012 Olympics, his living mantra: “whatever the circumstances, never give up”, a stop watch representing his winning time at the 2012 Olympics as well as colours of the South African flag which symbolise his patriotism.

Wildlands Conservation Trust CEO Andrew Venter said it is always an emotional time when you watch the news and hear of another rhino that has been killed. “We need young South Africans who have done well and who inspire us all to stand up and fight for their heritage,” he said.
